I think there are 2 strands to it.
I’m not saying they face no issues whatsoever, but I’d say that transgender people who transition from male to female or vice versa, be that surgically or through wholesale lifestyle change, are on the whole pretty well accepted. I’ve never seen Piers make any derogatory comment about them (indeed he’s good friends with India Willoughby from what I’ve seen). My experience of people who fit this description is that they tend not to want to be classed as trans, they want to be classed as the gender to which they have transitioned.
What he tends to comment on, and what I’d say the majority of people struggle to understand, is the idea of identifying as something other than male or female. The perception of this tends to be that it is done for attention. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m not sure I’d describe this as trans.
I’m not passing any sort of judgment here and I know people who fit all of these descriptions myself, but I think it’s important to draw a distinction between the two. I know of people who fit the first description who strongly dislike those who fit the second one as they feel it undermines and demeans what they have gone through.
(I hope i'm not going slightly off-topic.)
My feeling on this point is, I totally get that transgenderness can be a topic which can be difficult to understand on some aspects (heck, even I struggle to understand my transidentity, so…). And the topic of non-binary gender identity, as it is literally placed beyond the common man/woman dichotomy, can be even tougher to apprehend for some, and I hear that.
I feel that the role of any news department, whether on this topic or on any other topic, should ideally do so with the intent of providing a better comprehension to the viewer (whatever the viewer's feeling or opinion about this afterwards). And, as a morning news show with hundreds of thousands of viewers across the UK every day, one could expect GMB to adhere to that*. But sadly, this is doesn't seem to the case with Mr Morgan.
I can only hope that his interventions in GMB don't fuel some kind of prejudice (for lack of a better word; call it how you want) against transgender and non-binary people; but alas, and correct me if I'm wrong (because I'm only getting indirect echoes from the UK through acquaintances and social media, including this forum; I live on the other side of the Channel, after all), I get the feeling that some parts of the British paper press jumped in the same wagon.
* Side note: I am not assuming here that GMB is entirely made of trash.
