"PC gone mad" is just code for "I wish I could be racist/homophobic/sexist" etc.

Never a truer statement made, I believe (in most cases).

"PC gone mad" is how the gay rights movement was described in the 80s and 90s while Piers was using his platform to bring us national newspaper headlines like "EastBenders" and "The Poofs of Pop", and leading witch hunts on gay celebrities.

On the other hand it doesn't always work, such as Laurence Fox's appearance on Question Time in Liverpool last week where his comments on "white privilege" tanked except for those who are on the alt-right.

Au contraire, LL. I think he's onto something.

The vast majority of Brits are libertarian and tolerant - you just have to look at the surveys to see that. He is occupying that space where he wants equality of opportunity and fairness for all but he is getting slightly pissed off that, in his mind, he sees his "kind" as being blamed for it.

It's all very complicated but I believe fundamentally not alt-right or racist.

PC is something for my generation really - it was big in the 90s and early 00s. I subscribe to it and believe in it. To me, it was never divisive.

However, "woke" ideology, although driven by good intentions, is dangerous, imo. Just because there might be truth to it doesn't mean we should let the genie out of the bottle.

Am I as wound up about it as Fox? Honestly, no, but I can see the validity in his arguments as clearly as I can see validity in the woke argument. It'll take someone smarter than me though to understand how to bring the two sides together.

Remember that incident particularly well.

That's why when today's young gay people think it's a deeply evil and homophobic society, they don't realise how different (and worse) it was in the past. Of course, not everything is perfect now but it's so much better than back in the day.

Surely you mean "liberal", not "libertarian"?

Although we've just elected a very non-liberal government, so maybe not.

No, I definitely meant libertarian. But I would agree with you that Brits are, in the main, liberal as well.

It was much worse for gay and lesbian people in the past, agreed. And there has been considerable progress - it would be churlish to suggest otherwise. But I'd argue that trans people are back in the 90s when it comes to acceptance, and the mockery that Piers subjected gay people to in the past isn't a million miles away from him choosing to "identify as a penguin" in the present day.

Trans people have basically become the new punching bags as homosexuality has become a lot more accepted in society. It's incredibly sad that anyone should be treated this way, but some people just can't tolerate anyone they see as "different" or "unusual".

Not helped by CIS women who won't accept trans women in female changing rooms for example, who then bring up fears about males wanting to perv or abuse CIS women and girls. Prejudice masquerading as fear.

We have people who simply won't accept that there are people who feel they were born in the wrong gender.

I think there are 2 strands to it.

I’m not saying they face no issues whatsoever, but I’d say that transgender people who transition from male to female or vice versa, be that surgically or through wholesale lifestyle change, are on the whole pretty well accepted. I’ve never seen Piers make any derogatory comment about them (indeed he’s good friends with India Willoughby from what I’ve seen). My experience of people who fit this description is that they tend not to want to be classed as trans, they want to be classed as the gender to which they have transitioned.

What he tends to comment on, and what I’d say the majority of people struggle to understand, is the idea of identifying as something other than male or female. The perception of this tends to be that it is done for attention. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m not sure I’d describe this as trans.

I’m not passing any sort of judgment here and I know people who fit all of these descriptions myself, but I think it’s important to draw a distinction between the two. I know of people who fit the first description who strongly dislike those who fit the second one as they feel it undermines and demeans what they have gone through.

I'm pretty sure, in most cases, it's actual fear, particularly given how many women have been sexually assaulted.

I don’t believe Kate has ever been given the respect or recognition she deserves. She’s been on breakfast TV on ITV for years and I’ve honestly never really found her un enjoyable to watch. I think she’s got a great personality and sense of humour unlike some who are currently on GMB. I just feel like she’s been shoved aside constantly since GMTV was axed with all of its successors inc Daybreak & GMB. She has always seemed to gel with other presenters no matter who it is she’s always had a good chemistry with them whether it be Aled Jones, John Stapleton, Piers and of course Ben. Same could be said for Ranvir too but to be honest I think she’s probably done better for herself since Daybreak ended as she’s had her hand in many different TV roles since!
