Hello there,

I am currently reading Independent Television in Britain: Volume 5: ITV and IBA 1981-92 and have finished Under the Hammer, which covers the ins and outs of the 1991 franchise round. For that reason, I would like to know if there are any good books to read following on from this or similar books which tell a similar story but may possibly about other channels such as (the history of) Channel 4, or books which are similar tell a similar story about British TV channels and networks in a ways Applemask/Bob the Fish has done on Square Peg or ITV in the face?

I can think of two:

If you can get hold of copies, the ITV Yearbooks and BBC Handbooks are invaluable for their 'at the time' content. Gives you an idea of the 'Broadcasting Politics' of the time too.

Maggie Brown has been working on a follow-up to her first book on Channel 4 'A Licence To Be Different". Though I'm not sure when it will be published.

"Sky High: The Rise and Rise of BSkyB" by Matthew Horsman gives a good account of Sky's early years.

"Live TV!: Telly Brats and Topless Darts - The Uncut Story of Tabloid TV" is fun account of Live TV! under Janet Street Porter and Kelvin Mackenzie.

I tweeted her about it a few months ago and she said she was waiting on C4 to tie down a publisher and there was no expected date at the moment.

This is such a brilliant book.

Also, would love to see Morning Glory get an update.

Just a question regarding "DIshed". As I have watched the whole of Square Peg, would I be wasting my time by reading Dished? Any advice from anyone who has managed to both read the book and watch the series? Does the book contain interesting stuff which was excluded from the Square peg series?

I have TV books which I bought back in 2005. The first is called And Finally by Richard Lindley, which was basically the story of ITN. It’s quite a read but it’s facisinating and very detailed. I also then bought the the Official ITV50 book published by Granada, to back up the series they made. The book is more detailed than the series (probably timing reasons) and wasn’t afraid to be critical at times also. I’m sure both books can be picked up second hand.

I’m still awaiting for Dished! The story of BSB to be reasonably priced on paperback second hand.

Dished! does go into huge detail - far more than a TV doc would.

Worth looking out ex Granada boss Dennis Forman's Persona Granada from 1997, and David Docherty's Running the Show - the latter covering London Weekend's first twenty-one years, published in 1990.

Agreed. Applemask did a great job but the book had far more detail

"Inside Story" by Greg Dyke. Some life stories but fascinating chapters on TVAM and LWT
