GMTV on ITV2

What's the point? (March 2004)

On ITV(1) GMTV operate the franchise on the ITV1 network frequencies between 0600 and 0925 and co-operate when ITV1 want to use their airtime for other things like the Grand Prix.

But what really baffles me is why GMTV also appears on ITV2 between 0600 and 0925?

Surely ITV2 is not a franchise that was bid for therefore ITV2 can broadcast 24 hours a day if it so wishes.

Why is GMTV allowed to broadcast a similar service on both ITV channels? It seems a bit pointless unless they are paying ITV2 for the usage of the channel?

It would be great if ITV2 decided to show retro cartoons in these hours that they 'allow' GMTV2 to broadcast on their service.

I would love to see re-runs of Top cat, Batfink, Roadrunner, Hong Kong Phoo-ey and even the odd episode of Seasame Street aswell.

What would anyone else like to see on ITV2 during GMTV hours?

(ps and dont say repeats of Trisha, Corrie or Emmerdale!)

MUX2 on DTT (Freeview if you wish) is split in 3 - just under half is allocated to Channel 4, a small bit to Teletext and the rest (just under a half) is allocated to the ITV companies.

The franchise that gives GMTV 6:00-9:25 on analogue ITV also includes ITVs space on digital TV,

...and thus GMTV2 has the right to broadcast between 6:00-9:25 on DTT. It does not however (AFAIK anyway) have the right to broadcast between these times on other platforms, but does anyway. That GMTV controls all of ITV's DTT space between 6:00-9:25 was also the reason why ITV News Channel used to stop running on DTT whilst GMTV was on (presumably the eventual deal reached was that GMTV let ITV News Channel operate in their space in return for being allowed to broadcast on ITV2 on Dsat/cable.

OK so GMTV is an official ITV franchise that just so happens to operate between 0600 and 0925 on the ITV(1) network.

I still dont see the relevance of putting a GMTV2 service on ITV2 though.
And there is NO reason why GMTV2 is carried on ITV2 via SKY and Cable services!

ITV2 doesnt broadcast totally from 0925 - 0600 in the morning and so surely GMTV could be 'given' say 0400 - 0730 where ITV2 could show cartoons from 0730 - 0930 before starting their usual service.

Yes, it's the ITV Network breakfast franchise holder, holding a licence to broadcast from 6:00-9:25 on the ITV Network. Regional licencees hold a licence to broadcast from 9:25-6:00

Maybe there isn't, but on DTT they have the space nevertheless. Roughly half of the D3&4 multiplex is assigned 'to ITV'. For once that doesn't mean ITV plc, that means the ITV Network franchisees. Whether or not they want it, GMTV have the right to broadcast on all of ITV's DTT space during 6:00-9:25. As I said above, this is why until a few months ago the ITV News Channel didn't broadcast on DTT whilst GMTV was on.

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, no they don't have a right to broadcast as part of ITV2 except on DTT. Presumably some sort of deal was struck (perhaps ITV plc get a share of GMTV's ad revenue from GMTV2, perhaps they give them free promotion slots?) which enabled it to happen, but nevertheless it has.

It's not a matter of ITV2 'giving' time to GMTV; GMTV has the space on DTT between 6:00-9:25 as part of their licence entitlements, it's nothing to do with how ITV plc would like to accomodate them. It would get a bit confusing if the DSAT/Dcab schedules were different, so it's no surprise that they've reached an agreement.

There wasn't always a direct 9:25 startup on ITV2 either; it used to be the case that GMTV2 would finish at 9:25 and then you wouldn't get another peep out of channel 6 until 4PM in the afternoon when ITV2 started. Then the time gradually got moved back until they ended up running all day like they do now.

I think also there was a time when in Northern Ireland and Scotland, GMTV2 appeared as a seperate channel number in the lineup, so there was then a physical separation of the two services.

Well it's probably a good job GMTV2 does broadcast.. after all ITV2 don't have enough programming as it is, so we'd only get more Corrie / Emmerdale repeats!

Rubbish.
If GMTV really wanted to 'co-operate for other things like the Grand Prix' then they would let have ITV1 have the airtime to show the Sat qualifying live as well as the race. At the moment, the toys come out of the pram at the mere hint of giving more airtime than is necessary, and only let ITV1 show the race on Sunday live. Sad

Of course, they fail to realise that F1 qualifiying would get more of an audience that that load of half-baked poxy stream of US cartoons that pass for 'entertaining childrens output' that stinks up the channel between 7 - 9.25am.

I can't really stand GMTV2, though I am more of a Cheers person in the morning.

But when ITV2 started on CWC Analogue, GMTV2 launched a month after ITV2 did, the morning after ITV2 started we got the caption plus a fishtank which had on it 'GMTV:2 Launches 4th Jaunary 1999', but a day after that it was replaced with TV Today from CWC and it stayed like that for some time and we didn't have GMTV2 for 8 months or so. Plus it was more annoying at weekends as CWC kept TV Today on until 9.30am when programmes had started at 9.25am. But in July 1999 they finally added it, but they treat it like a seperate channel. In a Cable Guide somewhere it says 'GMTV2 added on Channel 46 from Thursday'. Though on NTL Digital now if you look at the Favourites list it still has on it ITV2/GMTV2. The whole concept in 1999 wasn't that bad, but now it's pants, as it's just Kids shows, The News Hour and The Sunday Programme.

Though I like the music they use as a filler when The News Hour on ITV1 is showing Regional News, much better than the music they use on GMTV all together.

Though the same reason about the ITV NC not coming on in the mornings is the same as the one about The ITV Sport Channel not being on before 9.25am.

Apart from the fact that it isn't really worth their while running an opt out service on satellite and cable for a few hours every morning.
