It was apparently too "London-centric"

Where was that said?

The Guardian - October 2009: ITV to drop Big Ben from News at Ten titles

Quote:
...ITV executives believe the imagery may be too London-centric and could irritate viewers outside the capital...

Fair enough, I just couldn't remember such a quote.

I wouldn't say it didn't work for the news - it certainly looked a hell of a lot better than the current, more sterile environment that is employed on ITV News.

I should correct my comment regarding the NaT v.3 set: I actually thought it gave the programme gravitas. I don't think ITV were wrong to use it for that programme.

However, I don't think it's right for any other sort of programme - unless they are making a statement about their location - as the original 'This Morning' did: "we're in Liverpool, a new studio with the public in the background, not in a regional hub". It was also unique in 1988, but not in 2010.

I must say I'm rather confused that ITV got rid of the skyline on their news programmes - despite it looking rather nice, especially on NaT - because it was apparently too "London-centric", and then go ahead and put a skyline view of London on the new breakfast programme.

GMTV/Daybreak may have to be rather clever to make the most of the skyline vista for their news elements, yet manage to make it seem just subliminal for the later 'fluffy' topics.

Hopefully the opening titles will feature views from across the United Kingdom at daybreak, accompanied by some gentle music that slowly builds to a crescendo as the sun rises. For example:

Inspirational landmarks such as Humber Bridge (from a helicopter - how amazing would that look?)

Some pretty countryside settings, with rabbits or deer, or something.

Stonehenge, Angel of the North, Canary Wharf, Trafalgar Square, Eden Project, maybe one of the container ports...

Or maybe they won't really have any opening titles, and just opt for something similar to Channel 7 Sunrise - the logo just on an animating background (Which looks rather nice). I personally don't give a monkeys about where a programme comes from. London is our capital city and home to the big broadcasters such as ITV and the BBC. Do people complain about the 'live from London' you may hear on some programmes (Such as what was on The Paul O'Grady Show)? The skyline over river thames looks great on This Morning. I don't live in London so I don't see what it's like when the sun rises, but if it looks better than the current print GMTV use as a backdrop, then I look forward to seeing it. The Thames skyline is something that everyone does (or should atleast) recognise. What could be used otherwise? a skyline of Moss-Side? Or the view from top of mount Snowdon?

No, because the point is that it makes the show seem more glamorous and exciting. Same with the 'live from Pinewood Studios' at the beginning of The Whole 19 Yards.

The old LNN studio is a good one and does have a great view, not just on the bit facing St Paul's that everyone's familiar with but also to camera left along side the river. The sunrises will be nice, they were something not really seen when London Today/Tonight came from there.

It's got two walls without windows of course so they might well have a presentation area without a view outside. That is the way it's mostly been used in recent years, you wouldn't even know it was that studio (the same with the This Morning one, that been used for sports programmes without utilising the view). As I say it's been very underused for years (the current occupants don't even get to utilise the view that often as they've used it mostly in winter evenings!)

Studio 7 is roughly the same size as GMTV's current studio, but it's long rather than square, it's also got a 30ish degree kink so that the main window faces St Pauls

ITV seem oddly convinced that everyone wants to look out of a window onto a London skyline, even if it is real.

They forget that most of the population don't live in London and don't actually care what happens there. It's rather senseless to effectively localise two live daily programmes in this way, especially after they realised that it didn't work for NAT v.3!

It is a big turn around from what ITV used to be; the BBC was 'London' and ITV was 'outside London'... with the beeb relocating whole genres to Salford and ITV holed up on the South Bank it's reversed

Maybe a news desk added to the new format?

The TVam name comparison was made many pages ago.

Will it be based around a newsdesk or have any other comparison with the previous 'Daybreak'?... very unlikely, that only lasted only a few months

I think the original Daybreak lasted until May 1983, when the cutbacks drastically began at TV-am, and when the 9.25am became automated.

Although this article suggests that it's going to be called Day.... I really hope not!
