So I wonder if the timing of Lorraine's show will change? Would make more sense to be from 9 - 10 than starting at 8.25 if it's having a studio audience. Weren't there mutterings of Jeremy Kyle being dropped?

Have a mate who's a news director, the latest plan apparently for September....

0600 ITV Morning News
0700 Adrian Chiles + AN Other GMTV Show
0900 Lorraine + live audience
1000 This Morning
1200 Loose Women

No mention of J Kyle, but presumably they could stick him in the afternoons, there are loads of episodes recorded apparently, he is recording pilots for Granada in the States

Like every plan though, it'll change loads of times before September, they haven't thought about stand in presenters he reckons

If the ITV Morning News is shifted forward 30 minutes and extended to an hour in the place of what was the GMTV Newshour, isn't there a possibility that this could be a problem with the amount of news hours ITV will have, because in legal terms 6.00-9.25am is still a separate service, so any hours of news during the GMTV period will not count to any quotas ITV have to meet, which means they would need to make it up elsewhere in the schedules? It is possible Ofcom could look the other way, but legally they may not be able to.

ITV now own the current rights to the Channel 3 Breakfast License (as they fully own GMTV) so could brand it under ITV News if they wish. It is my understanding that Ofcom have cleared the way for scrapping a separate licence now/in the near future anyway as it makes no sense in this day and age.

That makes a lot of sense. I wonder if the breakfast airtime were to be given over to the existing Channel 3 licence holders, whether STV / UTV would go to the bother of producing their own breakfast programmes or continue with the ITV service.

The brand doesn't matter, any news on during the breakfast licence of 6.00am-9.25am would not count to the quota for the ITV regional licences. They would be down 2.5 hours (3.5 hours if the Morning News on Saturday/Sunday is scrapped or moved into the breakfast licence hours) if the Morning News was no longer on at 5.30am.

In theory STV and UTV would have to produce the news updates during GMTV, which they don't currently do.

Oops, guess I'll have to re-post my reply!

STV and UTV aren't producing the breakfast bulletins, true, but not through choice. UTV was stripped of theirs after a disagreement when they broke into GMTV to show local breaking news and STV's breakfast franchises were given to another company, so I'm sure both would happily go back to providing the bulletins and it would make far more sense than having a small breakfast-only team for each region.

I thought that interview with the two from Emmerdale was a complete bloody disaster. It was cringingly bad!!

if GMTV had that title sequence with some refinements and the same amount of depth - it would beat BBC Breakfast

I know we are all presentation fans here - but I think you're very misguided if you think that having an amazing opening titles sequence is what is required for GMTV to beat Breakfast in the ratings...

Not to mention I imagine many viewers don't tune in early enough to see the titles anyway.

Re: The London Backdrop

All three of the major US morning programmes are based in New York, and make a big deal of it, with their main title sequences heavily featuring the city skyline/external shots of their studio. The US is a far more divided society than the UK, but their viewers in the Deep South seemingly don't mind their breakfast telly coming from New York, or at least the networks don't seem to think it's an issue.

London not only has the distinction of being the UK's largest city but also its capital. Rather than the usual approach of having a London backdrop and playing it down, or not having one at all, I hope GMTV take the US approach and just go for it and big up what will be a pretty cool location. This could be complemented nicely by increased focus on regional stories. Just of the top of my head this could include, for example, live two-ways with regional newsreaders/reporters where major news stories have broken
