What I don't get is, I thought they wanted GMTV to be more newsy, does Adrian have any journalistic background? I mean sport maybe but hard news? Could he interview the Prime Minister? I think it will be very interesting...

On the future for the show and the presenters, I think I'd put Adrian and Emma together, I think GMTV bosses will be thinking of the popularity of Christine with Adrian, her being a young, good looking co-presenter, just like Emma is. And of course she has a great background in news.

Keep Andrew and Helen as stand-in presenters. Helen should permanently have Penny's slot though. So if one day she was presenting the main show, put somebody like Nina Hossain on the newsdesk. (and yes, get rid of Kate and Ben)

Keep Lorraine's slot as normal.

He studied journalism at Cardiff and was a sports reporter before moving to the BBC, where he programmes like Working Lunch and 'Financial World Tonight', amongst other programmes.

Despite the misgivings about Adrian, I believe he's the right hiring for GMTV. He has the right mix of journalistic credibility and has been part of a BBC show which targets GMTV's housewife demographic with great success.

The question should be, which female presenter should join him? I don't think Labour Kate or Posh Emma would gel well with him though, Lorraine Kelly would be my first choice with her 25+ experience of breakfast television.

I'd still probably bring in Kate Thornton, or how about making a move for Christine Bleakley ?

Kate can hold her own in a serious interview and we all know Emma has only recently come from rolling news so it should be no problem for her either. If they keep those 2 then they should be OK but if they axe them in favour of Kate Thornton or something then that just sums up the level GMTV are going for.

Adrian just isn't very 'GMTV', I think don't think its going to work at all.

But now that GMTV are going for a more news based format, will there be any need to have a separate news presenter? BBC Breakfast ditched Moira so i woiuldn't be surprised if we have Kate and Adrian (A good pairing methinks and Andrew and Emma to do the other half of the week, that is if rumours that Adrian will do a five day week ARENT true) reading the news themselves all morning - much like Breakfast. Having said that, GMTV shouldn't really become an absolute clone of Breaky, so Helen could stay. She should in my opinion!

Just a thought, what if GMTV is going 6/7 days a week with the relaunch? This Morning have recently done it, and with GMTV kids not up to much, is there the possibility of it being on every day, even if its just something like 7-9 at weekends?

It would be a natural progression for the show and something that should definitely considered. Even if it is just to compete with Breakfast on Saturdays. ITV have very poor news coverage on weekends so this airtime extensionn would be benificial.

One positive thing that has come out of this whole Adrian thing is that i think the GMTV name is staying. All broadcasters covering the story have mentioned that he will become the main host on 'GMTV'. Surely if they were going to change the name they would refrain from using the brand and use somehting along the lines of 'Adrian will be joining ITV and anchor their Breakfast broadcasting service' or whatever.

That's just it though, GMTV in it's current incarnation after 7am doesn't work, ruined by years of dumbed down output, easy interviews for Labour politicians, the smugness of Fiona and Kate, the male airheads of Ben and Andrew, competition scandals and so on.

ITV need to wipe the slate clean and relaunch it that wipes away those concerns and become the entertaining news and lifestyle magazine it has been in the past.

It's no wonder BBC Breakfast which isn't exactly a shining example of great journalism, especially after 8.30am does so well.

Considering all the big news broadcasters mentioned the Chiles signing in their bulletins, i was slightly bewildered to find that gMTV mentioned nothing of the sort! Although it is mentioned on their website!http://www.gm.tv/presenters/47938-adrian-chiles-joins-gmtv.html

Qutoes here include
Quote:
Adrian Chiles, the presenter of the BBC's popular One Show, will anchor GMTV later this year.

Quote:
He has the rare talent of being able to make television presenting look effortless. He will be at home at ITV whether it is on our flagship breakfast programme or in the football studio."

What has happened to Dan Lobb? I watched the entire show from 7am and he wasn't on once! These inconsistencies really let GMTV down at a time when the station appears to be flourishing.

Also, i enjoyed an item at the beginning of Lorraines show whereby many of the newspaper stories of the day were discussed - much like the same item that features on this morning. This item should be incorpoated into the 7-8 segment. I know they do somehting similar where the front page stories are briefly touched on, but having guest people to discuss inner stories would add some variety to the show.

Finally, it seems that this plan has gone down the pan already!

Penny Smith will be leaving GMTV after 17 years on the sofa. The change will mean a move to a core presenting team on screen throughout GMTV's output.

But the core format will no doubt stay the same, it will just skew more one way or the other than it does now. The format has always been the same, news/lifestyle/showbiz, its just in latter years it has become much more skewed towards showbiz. There seems to be a myth that GMTV used to be fairly respectable news but its always been similar to how it is now.

The format does work, just not with the current presenters. And Adrian probably isn't the right man to fix that problem.

He's got more qualifications than most the GMTV presenters put together.
