Very interesting, Jason.

That set may look rather dated now as it's 17 years ago. However, I prefer that layout with different areas containing a common theme rather than the approach the have at present, which is still the TV-am clone.

If GMTV (as a programme) want to have an easy-going, family-style approach, but with an element of serious news (the desk area, albeit with the fire in the background) then they should go for that again.

At the moment the GMTV set has little difference to the BBC Breakfast set to the casual 'non-anorak' viewer: circular sofa, red/orangey background, mugs on a desk.

That's a URL, not an image.
Just put it in without the tags, it's easier.

Upon watching that clip, it's a very well designed set for a small space.
What exactly did they have in the set?
> The desk/dining table area for news
> The sofa area
> The kitchen area (wasn't this mainly used for the children's section with Simon Parkin?)
Did they have any other parts, for example did they have performances back then, and if so were they performed in the kitchen? And was this set located in the same studio as current?

I think they've continued to go with a loft style apartment look, making everything very open plan for quite a few years, but that's the problem, the set has been the same except a new layout & the changing of the news area with the 2009 look.

I'd like to see GMTV go down the route of a similar set & production as sunrise in both Australia & New Zealand. I do like how the news & sport anchors stay with them through the majority of the programme. I do love the sunrise Australia set, but prefer the music & titles to the New Zealand version, as seen here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2X-AMOTP88.

It would be interesting to see a desk on GMTV. I do like the idea of having the main presenters from 6am onwards, I'd like to see them keep Penny, using her for news all through the programme, and maybe as a Friday anchor & to sit at a desk with the main presenters.

In terms of set design, I always thought that the RI:SE (mk 1) set was a great design with all of the monitors, the news/presentation wall, the desk, and eventually the sofa area with coffee machine at the back, maybe a bit too much for GMTV with the metal, but add glass, wood & carpets & it would be lovely.

OVERLOAD OF BLUE LIGHTING! I can see what they want to do, but blue lights on cream really doesn't work. If they want a news presentation area, build one, not around the look of the rest of the studio. I think they should use the whole area there (both walls), rather than the one wall and screen, and push the desk back.

Also, the glass/plastic things (like a glass brick wall, but on a budget) they have on the wall at the ends of the main area would be better there, with blue lighting behind it. Also what happened to the plastic GMTV logo they used during the conference?

How long was it before the TV-AM clone set was introduced?

A few months, judging from this clip:

It was march/april 93. This was also when the news hour started and Eamonn and lorraine presented the main programme

The News Hour didn't start with the new set (which I seem to remember was March, possibly not long after half term as Simon Parkin closed the holiday kids section "It's NOT" by telling us it'd all look different on Monday)

- in fact, I think it was a good few months later that the News Hour began, as initially after tjhe revamp the newsreader was pictured in front of a live shot of the gallery. Looked dreadful. Only when the NH started did they change the backdrop to a still of the blinds on one side of the set.

Also Lorraine had been swiftly bumped up to full time main anchor in about the February, when Fiona had quit, over the whole F-Factor argument.

(Can you tell I was a rather more avid viewer of GMTV back then...?)

Does anyone have recording of original 'news hour' intro music . I think it only lasted a few months or maybe weeks?
