I would argue that a lot of people (perhaps even the majority don't watch the whole programme, just snippits from when they get up and go to work. For example I have never seen the 6 - 7 slot and if without this site I probably wouldn't even know there were different presenters then.
Also, to those that argue that GMTV is a station with different programmes, arguably since ITV's take-over, it has fundamentally become a programme on ITV1, even if it's still not technically that. Having 7 presenters for one 'programme' is hardly cost-effective.
Why do we want two BBC Breakfast's? One of the reasons people watch GMTV is because it isn't all News orientated, and because it's different from two people in one space for 3/4 hours.

Why did GMTV just sign Dan Lobb as their sports presenter if they want to cut costs?
Surely Castle should be on sport, Emma & John on Newshour (Emma stays on for News updates) and Penny and Ben on Today. Thus ditching Kate, she could go to Live from Studio Five

Neither is buying a station when the company is broke, but ITV don't care.

That doesn't really work, Michael.
Imagine ITV have just taken out a 'loan' in order to buy GMTV - it makes more sense for them to do this, receiving the remaining 25% of the profits from advertising in what is (or at least could be) a very lucrative time of the morning than put money into Regional News, where advertising is harder up, or investing in new original programming which may not do well.
If they want to get out of their economic rough-patch then investing in things known to make money is the best way to do so.
And besides, ITV didn't buy a station. They bought the remaining stake in a station they already majority-own. Bit different.

I think most peoples problem with GMTV is that it doesn't know which direction to go in. The newshour is all good but by the time GMTV Today arrives, they don't seem to know whether they want to do news or want it to be like This Morning and it all ends up a bit of a mess.
I think what they're best doing (and pretty much what I said earlier in the thread) is to move the newshour to ITN presented by John & Emma and basically use the ITV News branding so ITV News is practically on air from 5.30am-7am (Charlene or whoever doing the 5.30am bulletin as usual). Then if they air GMTV as usual taking a more 'This Morning' approach with no news from the sofa, and crossing to ITV News for news updates, I think it could look a bit more structured and authentic.

Eamonn Holmes may be returning to the sofa

GMTV seems to be gearing up for yet another relaunch, and depending on the direction it takes, if Eamonn does return it could be worth ITV dropping Ruth from This Morning and moving her to GMTV as well.

I think this may well be the route they may take. A 'harder' (ITV News-branded) first hour followed by a slicker, better-produced, "This Morning"-style main prog....with ITV News updates bolted on. The 'GMTV News' brand (in as much as there is one) will cease to exist, in the same way that the gm.tv website will surely close.
