...and then the news could be outsourced to ITN.
Why would ITV want rwo suppliers of national news when they will save money with just one.

I think it's a great idea, in the current market conditions this should have been done years ago. If we were still in an age where ITV had a 40% audience share, then a seperate franchise is okay. But for a broadcaster that's currently dying on its backside, this is just common sense. All it means is that GMTV Ltd would probably be dissolved, and for ITV and GMTV it means that it can reduce the amount of staff they have in Sales and management, which should save them alot of money.
Yes they'll anger Disney by doing this, but I'm sure an agreement could be reached between the two companies, the only thing Disney really contributes to is the Childrens output at the Weekends, which I doubt ITV or GMTV would give up, as it seems to be doing okay.
And it will probably be the end of the 9.25am handover, it's no problem on weekdays, but for weekends it should make scheduling a little easier, as there's nothing consistent in the 9.25am slot anymore.
I take it GMTV2 on ITV4 would probably be also affected.

I just don't like the way OFCOM are going about this - yet again it seems to be caving in to ITV. Their rational seems to be GMTV's doing OK financially, ITV isn't - so we'll give ITV GMTV.

They would also probably merge the newsteams so they will be able to make cutbacks there too.

merge? they'll just outsource it to ITN and keep a small selection of the GMTV news "faces".

ITV are daft but I don't think they're daft enough to get rid of GMTV completely. If the plans do go ahead then I'd expect that GMTV stays on ITV, but just as a programme and basically nothing changes to the viewer. Perhaps the only changes apparent to us would be during GMTV promos on ITV1, GMTV is billed as a programme "from 6am" each day and they would either cut it back to 9am or extend it to 9.30am.

I'm not so sure it is a good idea, i mean yes from a financial point of view yes it works, but there again GMTV does make sense in terms of income. GMTV Ltd, the business is making money and so why merge with ITV just to help ITV. If it went wrong its a franchise that you couldn't easily regain and rebuild. Michael Grade seems intent on merging everything - i.e. the plan for the local news this year - that has already got people annoyed and if i were him i wouldn't any more dissatisfied customers. At the end of the day its NOT all about money - you have to earn the audience's respect and trust and by taking away things that are comfortable you confuse people. I know this probably sounds like i don't know what im on about but i can't see any other reason apart from money as to why this would be any more successful than GMTV is at the moment.

After a night of no sleep whatsoever, I might not make much sense, but here goes:
Isn't GMTV so much easier to watch now? I used to be a dedicated viewer of Breakfast because I simply couldn't stand how dumbed-down the programme seemed to be with Fiona Phillips in the anchor seat. Since its more newsy relaunch and Fiona's departure, the whole thing just seems to work a lot more. The set's lovely, the graphics bright and welcoming, and it's one step closer to the GMTV I remember as a child.
Having said that, I felt this way at GMTV's last change back in 2005. I just hope they don't meddle again.
