Hmmm, 'tis a good point.
I just meant that it
sounded
like the theme music again, but at the end perhaps it is the closing titles rather than the opening titles. Makes more sense methinks.
Thanks for your help Rob. I was just curious after seeing the stark differences - it seems that for most of it it's just Spotlight being different!

BTW, Ian, when you said that the opening titles were played at the end of Spotlight, didn't you mean the end titles?!

I'm sure everyone knows that BBC LDN is practically unrecognisable as a BBC regional news programme, but I'll try my best to contrast because I'm difficult:
1) Starts with headlines, which has a specially modified London version of the headlines bed. I don't think there are thunderclaps;
2) Well, no window, no sidebar. Just the BBC LDN office/studio thing. Presenter stands on the second floor, in front of the standard metallic horizontal bar. Sometimes accompanied by a widescreen plasma screen, usually displaying red LDN logo;
3) There is a coming up bit around halfway: 'Coming up... (THUMP, proceeded by trendy music)'. Ends with da da da da signature tune and LDN logo in vast red. The programme is also split up with weird and wonderful bits of film. If we're about to go downstairs, we have a strange shot of someone walking downstairs. If we're going to the Online desk, we have an outside shot of Marylebone High Street. Another one includes some fish, you just have to see it to understand!;
4) In an office! Two-storey studio. Upstairs is basically overlooking downstairs, and to the left is the BBC London 94.9 radio studio. Downstairs is a couple of comfy chairs, a few computers and naturally a fish tank;
5) Sports news comes from downstairs in front of the fish with Mark Bright, an ex-footballer who has difficulty reading the auto-cue;
6) Ordinary weather (provided by the national team anyway!);
7) Ends with the London vamp/bed leading into 6. No headlines, just a casual reminder of whats on the radio station, what you can do online and anything else London. Ends with wideshot (usually downstairs) and caption with the usual 'BBC NEWS www.bbc.co.uk/london © BBC MMI' stuff.

Because not enough happens in either county by itself?
They've done the same in the North too.
Bradford and Leeds, both in West Yorkshire and right next to each other, have separate websites.
But the whole of South Yorkshire (Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham) is covered by a single site!

Oh! A new BBC 'where you live' site which actually is for where I live! How long has that been there? And why couldn't they manage separate sites for Surrey and Sussex?

This is what happens on BBC Look North
1) Balloon ident which fades into a long shot of the studio, Four headlines separated by thunderclaps, the latter two are sub opted by Hull, followed by opening titles
2) Main story read by both presenters in front of window, Then other main stories, one presenter per camera shot, They turn to the side, which means a beige wall is in the background at this point.
3) At about 18:36 there is a Coming Up Next item, one item, followed by a very short offscreen sting
4) Hull then opt out for their local news, Emley Moor viewers get their local news as in (2) above
5) Back together after about 6 minutes, We see both presenters in front of the window from this point onwards, its quite a small 4-piece window.
6) Banter with Paul Hudson the weather forecaster, before another Coming Up slot, this is ended by the Short Bulletin sting in vision.
7) Sports News here, Tanya Arnold used to present this, but she is on maternaty leave, so Christa and Harry do it from the desk.
There is a soft area, but only seen so far on North of Westminster
9) Banter, Weather and More Banter from Paul, then a light item, a bit more banter and then straight opt back to the '6'
And thats the main programme!

Ok. From the top. And what I can remember.
Reporting Scotland
When the regional news begins present speaks and says Blah Blah. Headling Bed Starts. No thunderclaps. Although i think the 6:30 news has them. They only use the studio for the 6:30 report. Everyother time the use a desk in their newsroom.
When the report ends to go back I'm sure I've seen it do Sting then Main News Ident/Sting. Or just straight to Main News Sting.
I also noticed once I'd been on holiday. BBC News East Midlands faded back to main ident for the news whereas reporting scotland just let it play without any fading in/out. If you know what I mean

Seriously, my thoughts/actions concerning Look North:
18:00 - Place small bet with myself: Who's gonna do the little twiddly thing at the start of the Six O'Clock News? Harry or Christa?
18:01 - Congratulate/commiserate myself accordingly.
18:02 (a) - If Harry AND shirt/tie combo is dreadful, I wince.
18:02 (b) - If Christa, I give a mark out of ten for choice of attire.
NB: If Christa is wearing the painted pink Bacofoil number, shout AAGH, quickly followed by a Shhhh from dad.
18:03 - Watch rest of Six O'Clock News, and wonder what the quirky item will be at the end of Look North today.
18:05 - Wonder if Square Eyes is going to be capturing any potential Slide Show fodder.
18:17-ish - Begin to make moves to finding a video space for Look North. Usually after the same day's lunchtime programme.
18:20 - Usually have good feeling by now if it's gonna be a Stud or Barbie programme. If Stud, have first excitement pang.
18:25-ish. Watch national weather and have second excitement pang. Next time I see a weather chart, it will be PAUL!
18:28 - Place bet: Who will be doing the sub-opt?
18:30 - Balloon ident and opening titles: Wowee! They're on air! I now have a smile on my face.
18:30 and a half - Discover who is doing sub-opt.
18:30 and a half (b) - If Clare Frisby, relax.
18:30 and a half (c) - If Helen Philpot, imagine Square Eyes going wild!
18:31 - Realise Harry's suit and tie combo is THAT bad.
18:31 and a half - watch first news items, and feel privileged to be watching what is to me the best regional news programme in Britain.
18:32 - Dad usually brings in a cup of tea.
18:36 - Feel saddened to be leaving Leeds for sub-opt.
18:36 and a half - Dive for the remote control as the sub-opt sound level (set at setting 'Louder than Hell' permanently) continues to remain un-fixed.
18:37 - Yearn for a direct feed from Emley, and then smile as I realise I'm only a couple of months away from getting one.
18:40 - Wonder how Nick Owen's getting on in Birmingham.
18:41 - Yawn as sub-opt news is yet again Hull and Grimsby-saturated.
18:43 - Receive warning from parents about going silly when Paul comes on screen.
18:44 - Returning from sub-opt, go into 'unashamed swooning and hormonal frenzy mode' when Hud the Stud comes on screen for mid-way banter. Flicker eyelids and grin widely. Remember July 19th.
18:46 - Unhooked from Cloud 9.
18:47 - Sit through sport.
18:48 - laugh as silly banter starts up as light-hearted news items begin.
18:50 - Start second wave of uncontrolled hormonal frenzy as Hud returns in all his glory, banter and all. Adopt love-struck facial expression. Open window as humidity rises. Remember July 19th again. Thank God Almighty for the gift of Sky Digital. Experience global warming.
18:53 - Faint at Hud's greatness. Revived with smelling salts, cold water and a shake from a parent. Howl like a wolf on heat as consciousness is regained. Parents slop saliva from room with buckets and mops. Father rings Environment Agency to cancel flood warning for house.
18:54 - laugh arse off at banter.
18:55 - Stop video when Huw Edwards comes back on.

I think Kathrine would like this style of Look North
1. Opening Titles
2. Paul Hudson for 15 minutes
3. Sting
4. New feature 'Kathrine rings Paul' where Kathrine rings mr Paul Hudson and makes him do whatever she wants him to.
