Like how he took a format that flopped in the US after one series and managed to make it run for 13 years here.

Barrymore takes over any show he’s on and makes everything about himself. He’d be a disaster on The Geberation Game.

There was similar, and justified in my opinion, fears when Peter Kay's name was being thrown about for suggested hosts.

Yep. You only have to look at how he wanders off round the back of the set or wherever when he’s being interviewed.

Once on Jonathan Ross, once on North West Tonight, and once with Alan Carr in his entire career.

In any case, I doubt he would have ever done it. Even the silliest gameshows need the host to be in slick presenter mode for some of it, and that's not his style.

The last interview with Jonathan Ross was quite telling. Most of the interview consisted of him dragging people he supposedly knew from the audience to meet everybody in the green room, spent a couple of minutes telling Jonathan he was going on tour, and vanished for the rest of the show. Not only was his "performance" not particularly funny but people on Twitter thought he was being rude by not staying for the rest of the show. I know some guests have done this in the past but it's sometimes stated that said guest has a show to get to or something like that.

The last Ross interview was indeed bizarre, it wasn't even entertaining like his previous one. I ended up finding video of his interview on the RTE Late Late Show which was actually a proper interview for once.

If the BBC wanted a female duo to do Generation Game then I'd suggest French & Saunders. Hugely and enduringly popular, genuinely liked and genuinely amusing and in Dawn French's case she seems genuinely liked...loved even.

But it would clearly be seen as a waste of their comedic talents, probably rightly so.

Well, that and the fact that French and Saunders aren't really a duo these days (though the reunion Christmas special was great so they still work well together)

There was only one interview for me with Alan Carr which Peter Kay did a few years back where he actually sat down and talked. Yes there was a bit with the audience, but most of it Peter was on his best behaviour for Alan. Peter has to be the worst talk show guest to have on. He used to do the warm up for Parkinson show, so he knows how talk shows work, but he ruins it. His management must have dreaded any talk show appearance, as he would never do them right. You can see why Graham Norton refused to have him on his show. Graham just could not stand him.

When was this revealed? I'm not refuting it, I'm just curious.

Never revealed publicly, but in private there was word that Graham's team saw Peter's performance on other talk shows and refused to have him on. He has never been on Graham's talk show. Look at the mess he created when he appeared on Graham's Saturday night show last year.

Can't argue with many of the comments here. What you need to be good at The Generation Game is:

- Personality: you must have a forceful personality and stamp it on the show
- Slickness: at the same time, it's not Blankety Blank. You can't just piss about and people will have a laugh with it. The thing needs held together, because it's almost designed to fall apart. Indeed, part of its charm is that it always appears to be on the edge of falling apart but the host must hold it together.
- Be an A-lister at the top of your game: you need to take the audience with you and have no doubts.

There's a story that does the rounds in Northern stand up circles that a young Graham Norton asked Peter for some local knowledge for his set (namely the most gay friendly area of Manchester). Instead of giving a real answer, Peter deadpanned 'Bury', which Graham used in good faith, which obviously failed. I can imagine something like that would cause resentment.
