Sky News were reporting breaking news that groups had surrounded the Pacific Quay Studios, and they weren't leaving until the BBC show the Gaza appeal.

Once again, this is mainly protest for the sake of protest. Rolling Eyes

11,000 complaints apparently. I doubt even half of them have donated.

For several hours, up to 100 protestors have been staging a sit-in the main entrance to BBC Scotland. They are staging the demo in protest at the BBC's refusal to air the GAZA DEC appeal. It's amazing me that this hasn't been given much coverage. Sky has covered it but most others haven't. Most interestingly the BBC is acting like the protest isn't happening. Is this some kind of BBC 'ignore it and it'll go away' attitude?! The protest hasn't affected Radio Scotland or BBC Scotland TV output..yet!

And is very unlikely to at any point, ever!!!!

If the protesters tried to siege the building and obstructed every access route in and out the building, the police would move them on pretty quickly. As they are, they can obstruct the main entrance, do their thing, get their publicity, and BBC Scotland can get on about it's business, by using another door in the worst case.

What a pathetic country we are becoming. Protest this, complain that. The BBC should NOT broadcast this appeal, it is caused by War and politics and is not a natural disaster. ITV, 4 and Five are broadcasting it, so what is the problem???? Good on the BBC and Sky, and I hope they don't bow to pressure from MP's and the archbishop of Canterbury - like they have any valid opinions at all!!

I should hope all our MPs have valid opinions, after all that's what we elect them for.

I think the problem is that the BBC is in a complete no-win situation. If they broadcast the appeal, they could leave themselves open to accusations of siding with the Palestinians. But equally, by actively choosing not to show it, they're risking accusations of siding with the Israelis.

Either way, they will risk accusaions of not being impartial, and on that basis I don't agree with their assertion that not showing the appeal will preserve their impartiality. My personal opinion is that they might as well show it for the humanitarian reasons alone, as either way they're going to get flack, but at least by showing it, some people's lives could be saved. However, I don't envy those whose decision it is in the slightest.

They don't have any opinions that are valid on what the BBC and Sky News should broadcast or not, that was what I meant.

They are not going to save any more or less lives just because the BBC and Sky decide not to show an appeal. ITV, 4 and Five are, and with the amount of press this whole ridiculous thing is getting, I'd be surprised if there was anybody that hasn't heard of it.

The BBC should have just got Tony Benn to do the appeal from the BBC News studio...

But they wouldn't have been able to know this at the time of making their decision. And I really don't think "The others are doing it so we don't need to bother" should ever be part of the editorial decision-making process.

I should add, whilst I don't think they made the right decision in the first place, I'd actually agree that reversing their decision at this time wouldn't be the right thing to do, and would actually be more damaging to the BBC.
