As this has been all over the news this morning, seems to me a bit ironic that broadcasters' refusal to air the Gaza charity appeal is probably drawing more attention to the appeal than would otherwise have occured if they HAD broadcast it?
But the BBC have broadcast the appeal ... They interviewed Tony Benn on the BBC News Channel this morning and he spoke over the presenter and did the appeal anyway
I was reading about this in the newspaper the other day and I didn't know that the TV channels basically had a gentleman's agreement with the Disasters Emergency Commitee (made up of several leading UK charities) that they were allowed 5 minutes of appeal airtime.
From what I also read, Sky refused to broadcast at all and ITV weren't sure on what they were doing.
But as said I'm sure there would have been less fuss if the damn thing was broadcast.

ITV have announced they will now broadcast it, though as you say the publicity surrounding the issue has generated more publicity and awareness than the broadcast alone ever would have.
How nice ITV, Channel Four and, Five are for showing.... completely forgetting they have said they will not show it!
Summed up fairly well by this article on the BBC News website...

Rivals break with BBC in Gaza row
ITV, Channel 4 and Five are to show a charity appeal for Gaza amid a row over the BBC's decision not to run the film.
Ministers urged the BBC to recognise "immense human suffering" and show the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal.

The BBC and other channels previously agreed not to show the appeal. Five now said the issue "transcends politics".

The BBC, ITV and Sky earlier agreed not to air the appeal. An ITV spokesman had said that no consensus could be reached among broadcasters, before announcing on Saturday that it would run the appeal.

I logged onto Livestation a little earlier, AlJazeera English didn't mention it, I then looked to see if AlJazeera Arabic was covering it and they were.
Pretty good tactics to name and shame the BBC, which has a respectable history in the Arab world, also now one of AlJazeera's competitors in the news channel field with BBC Arabic.
