What I'd consider as traditional "Game Shows" have completly disappeared off our screens in the last few years, though the more serious "Quiz shows" have made a bit of a comeback!
One thing which is missing now is the BBC1 lunchtime game shows. You used to be guaranteed an hour at noon every week, but the only gameshows of recent years have been Judgemental and Eggheads - both of which would air for a couple of weeks then disappear due to BBC1 being unable to keep the same daytime schedule for more than two weeks!
As for the classics - obviously The Crystal Maze is sorely missed. I'd also love to see Cluedo return and The Krypton Factor.
I'd like to see the return of Play Your Cards Right and Wipeout. These were two brilliant game shows that have sadly disappeared off of our screens. I'd also like to see another, modern, series of Through The Keyhole with Sir David Frost and the repetition of the exact same words, with his pauses in the exact same place, in every programme - 'Hello, hello and welcome to Through The Keyhole', 'Playing the game today is of course our panel, and what a panel it is'.
One thing I think should be brought back is the BBC ONE 12.30 game show. Now they just tend to be used as a filler in daytime slots.
These were some great gameshows that hold fond memories for me.
- Big Break
- Blockbusters (Bob Holness era)
- Bullseye
- Catchphrase (Roy Walker era)
- Chain Letters
- Family Fortunes (Les Dennis era)
- Going For Gold
- Keynotes (i'm sure most people will mock me for this one)
- Knightmare
- The Krypton Factor
- Play Your Cards Right
- The Price Is Right
- Runway
- Strike It Lucky (not 'Strike It Rich')
- Wheel Of Fortune (Nicky Campbell/John Leslie era)
I'm ashamed that I forgot to add The Crystal Maze and Countdown to that list.
Can someone please clarify for me why exactly The Crystal Maze ceased production in 1995, as I never really knew.
It really was one of the most innovative and ingenious programmes in all of television. Talk about being ahead of it's time - I don't think that time has even arrived yet!! It truly was in a league and genre of its own. I would have loved to have toured the set.
1. The Crystal Maze.
Show with a difference and nothing has come close since. If it was to return, ole Dick O'Brien would have to present again.
2. The Krypton Factor.
Had everything. Questions I couldn't understand let alone answer and an assault course that, as a 12 year old boy, I would have killed to take on!
3. Chain Letters.
The one bad point about this show was its timing! I recall being off school sick for a week and really missed watching this around lunchtime when I went back. # Chain-chain-chain-Chain Letters! #
Does anybody remember a game show on BBC2 (I think) and I think it was on on Fridays where they had this blue box on screen with three letters on it and the contestant had to think of a word which included the three letters?
