I'm pretty sure Challenge have aired the naughty version and there were some viewer complaints, so they edited it and publicised that it had now been edited for future broadcasts. I'm also quite certain it went out as the "naughty" version originally on ITV.

I'd have thought they'd just remove that episode completely (as they seem to do all the time for all sorts of reasons!).

There's no way that edit could possibly have been done after the fact- the animation was clearly remade at the time by the show's producers. There's no way you could edit from the "naughty" version and it look that clean and un-noticable. I still think it's because people have seen the "naughty" one so many times, via clip shows and the internet, they can swear they saw it shown as part of the actual episode, even though they haven't.

People's memories are unreliable, and until someone can produce a recording of the originl ITV broadcast showing the naughty version, I'll stick to my guns that it's never actually been broadcast.

Sky would literally have to colour over the small offending part of the moving image with the rest of the background colour already on display, it would be an incredibly easy thing for them to do. Hell, I could do it in 30 seconds in MS Paint.

For the reveal at the end they just froze part of the image so Mr Chips' arm doesn't go up and down, which again would be very simple for them to do, but was pointless for them to do as once the full image is revealed, the innuendo is completely gone anyway.

I'm pretty sure that isn't what's happened. And it's not just "colouring over" because his arm and the cane stays still and all moves in time with the rest of the animation. It's clearly re-rendered animation- which could only really have been redone by the original animators.

Besides, Challenge were showing that version LONG before Sky took over anyway.

Yes it seems lots of people believe the cane-pulling version went out, but I've never seen any evidence it ever did, and I'm 99% confident it never did. It's like all those people who can swear they saw Master Bates, Roger the cabin boy and Seaman Staines in Captain Pugwash even though they never existed (and I've argued with a few people who are adamant over this in the past!)

Michael Lush on the Late Late Breakfast Show is another one. And those who "remember" Lulu the Elephant on Blue Peter who weren't born at the time.

Saying that I was astonished when I actually first saw the famous "For those in black and white" snooker clip...I thought that was an urban myth for years.

Nah, I think anyone could've done that really. Whoever did it might have had access to the original animation files, though.

Surely the original files would be in an obsolete format by now?
