I really can't stand Gavin Esler (I haven't heard/seen him much, but the few times I have he really gets on my nerves) I don't know why News 24 kept him.

About the contracts, I'd take one from the Beeb - but they'd never hire an American - oh well
If I got a contract from the guys over here, I'd probably take NBC/MSNBC, CBS, or ABC. Not CNN and definetly not Fox.

Ok, so imagine you are a young, keen eager journalist, trying to break into TV News. You've got 3 contracts in front of you, one from BBC News, one from ITN one from Sky, who do you sign for ?

Beeb of course! But I'm not biased, honest Very Happy

Seriously... If you're a journo starting out, the only place to go is the Beeb - You'll get sooo much more training and experience than the other two biggies. Money (initially!) isn't everything.

Once you get the words 'BBC' on your CV, you'll be welcomed worldwide. If you went to ITN and tried for a job outside the UK, they're more likely to say 'Who's ITN?' The same for Sky the further afield you go.

Can't go wrong with the Beeb when you take those first tentative steps into the TV industry.

That's like Judy on This Morning saying 'oh s***
' live on air.
I was lucky enough to see that!

I have a collection of 'ABC News Bloopers' featuring all of the ABC anchors, past and present, swearing live on air.
In the CNN Q&A room today I accidentally said '79% of Americans don't have an assport'
Which led to a lot of confusion and amusement, not least at CNN CenTRE I presume!
I did, of course, mean passport.

Oh and I would sign for Sky News, I would get more exposure and remember, because Sky is smaller than the other networks you are more likely to be on Tv more.

I'm just watching BBC Wales Today and Jamie Owen strikes me as the sort of person who would be well suited to national news, don't anyone argue that Wales is a nation... you know what I mean!
So who else are possible candidates for national news?

I like Jamie, coming from my neck of the woods in west wales, you tend to support local people in their success Smile

he used to be a continuity announcer on radio 4, before going into journalism, and now of course presents wales today, and has been since around 1994.

BBC, Huw Edwards is welsh, so get more welsh folk reading the national news!! Smile

I must admit, I don't think Jamie's style is suited to national news. I won't go into print on why Wink But needless to say, that's my personal opinion! Smile

And dont' forget Jamez, for a short while he was also a continuity announcer for BBC Wales also. Though he once said in a Western Mail interview that they got rid of him or something.

I like Michael Collie on Midlands Today.

Trouble is though, he presents the weekend bulletins and a main one if Nick Own is off.

He also reads the news for WM and Radio 2, I think. So he could already be national I suppose, I'm not sure about Radio 2 but I think he does.

Yes, Matthew Amroliwala has done national BBC News before. He has presented the weekend bulletins quite often before. Also, Gavin Esler has presented the morning sumaries and the BBC News at One.

I think Martin Henfield! or Peter Levy! Actually I don't think Gordon Burns would be suited to national news either. He might be OK on News 24, he's very good at banter!

Remember Jamie used to read the news on Radio 4.

I think it depends what the contract was for - if it was a reporter or correspondent then I'd go for BBC. If it was for a presenter on a 24 hour news station then Sky News and if for a bulletin presenter, BBC. I'm free at the moment if anyone wants to offer me a job...! I've got a press card...!!! Very Happy
