The Granada/Yorkshire... Carlton/Central battle seems to be a sore point amongst you all. So lets have a heated debated!!!!
Should we
a) Unite ITV1 and have only regional op outs for news etc
b) Let Granada & Carlton reign of terror continue
c) Return to the old style regions, returning Central & Westcountry to the fold?
Over 2 U!
Next on ITV2.... ****!

I think it should be as follows:
- National continuity for landmark shows (news, Corrie etc.) - this would reduce optout troubles and provide cleaner switching
- Local continuity at all other times.
Also, I would make it so that all 15 regions had to have seperate names regardless of ownership.

Yes, I think this is a good idea. And the bit about all regions having seperate names is totally right! I hate this Granada/Carlton generalising of everything!
I say bring back Thames as the franchise holder for London - and get rid of Carlton.

Everyone used to say 'Central', when mentioning TV in my region. Now they generally say 'ITV'- not 'Carlton' or 'ITV1'.
BBC and ITV are fast going down hill.

Thankly HTV up until now has been a fairly local station here in the West Country. I was very worried when Carlton took over as rebranding would have destroyed that. I do believe that the ITV stations should put more investment into the shows and not waste money on rebranding.
Carlton has always been a 2nd rate TV station up to the classic Thames and now it's naffness is spreading across ITV1 like a virus. Now with the news that Granada is now rebranding make me both sad and angry. We've all grown up with our regions and destroying them will be a tradegy... sniff
Yeah I think that a strong ITV primetime (7-10) branding would be a good thing, with national continuity at these times, with an equally strong, totally regional ITV branding at all other times (dual branded so people know it's still ITV1, but with the emphasis on the regional station). Of course the only problem with this is the regional programmes in prime-time (against EastEnders).

yeah and people still call it 'central' alot too - i have never heard anyone call it carlton in real life.
just look at the evening mail letters page, from time to time people commenting on itv usually say'xxxx on central tv' etc
carltons supposed reason for the change was that people were confused at seeing (c) Carlton Television at the end of shows - i think having Central News, Central Weather, Central Sports Special & Central Weekend etc on Carlton makes people even more confused! - but they knew they wouldnt change the programme names, so they were lying - they were out to build an empire
Of course they'll still call it Central, the papers do, the local news does. It's the same in Westcountry land. You really do think they'd have learned from the Channel 3 North East debacle -- I didn't hear a single person call Tyne Tees that in the 18 months it was called that!!! Everyone still called it Tyne Tees or ITV or just 'number 3', which it had been called by some before and since, but no more people said it in 1997 than any other time!!

Let's hope someone from ITV is digesting this information. I notice by the poll that no one has voted for the current situation. Hardly a surprise there!

U can't beat the good old days with all the seperate regions, I mean look what happened to the ITV generic look after 1989 it was soon faded out and some regions like TVS didn't even use their version of the generic ident. I liked TVS before 1993 when Meridian came along, Meridian was at it's best when it started out though, compared to now and I distinctly remember watching Thames News as where I live I have always been able to pick up 2 regions which has always been handy! ITV like the BBC isn't what it used to be and in my view the only reason for it is because of SKY Television and other satelite networks and channels!
Who could possibly vote for a united ITV1? So it would just be another BBC1 clone? All terrestrial TV channels shlould be distinctive and regionalism is what made ITV (as it was pre-Carlton Central etc.) distinctive. Here was the general idea about 10-15 years ago:
BBC 1: General,wholesome entertainment, news
BBC 2: Minority programming/intellectual/news
ITV : regional programming/general entertainment/news
Channel 4: Minority programming/intellectual/cutting-edge entertainment
Now:
BBC 1: ITV-esque entertainment/news/sport/reality-TV
BBC 2 : Documentaries/American entertainment/reality-TV
ITV1: Crap/news/reality TV
C4: Documentaries/American entertainment/reality TV
C5 : Crap/reality TV
Okay I've been a bit selective but all channels are becoming clones of one another. Try being distinctive. You never know, you may be pleasantly surprised with the BARB figures.

LOL, very true. I noticed that BBC1 copied and the ITV1 'watch us all night' thread and have bettered it. Much more professional.
I've also just noticed I have just watched an hour and a half of comedy on BBC1 and laughed out loud. Shame it was half an hour of clangers and a hour of vintage BBC comedy!
