Did Sky One have a go at bidding? Because didn't they show Friends originally on it's first run.

It's a Friends spinoff. People were obsessed with Friends. A Friends spinoff is going to bring SOME obsessed fans over for a start, surely to goodness?

Yes viewers..not credibility. For people to take ch5 seriously it needs to offer something other then cast offs the other channels didn't want anymore presented by people the other channels don't want anymore either. It's a second hand channel.

I think all of the major broadcasters made a bid for the rights to Joey, as ITV were reported to have interest and obviously Sky would too. As for Friends that's different, Channel 4 had the full rights up to the end of Series 3, but the rights came up for renewal and Sky saw the success of the show, so they snapped up the Pay TV rights and C4 got the Free to Air rights. (Sky also managed to get the rights to ER at this time too) So Sky One had first run rights of Series 4-6, but Series 6 was shown to death on Sky.

Then by the time Series 7 was on the horizon the rights were up for renewal, and even ITV were putting in a bid, but Channel 4 got the full rights, though they annoyed some fans, as they put Series 7 on E4 when it started, so viewers without E4 would have to wait 6 months until Friends came back. But thats how it's been since Series 7, that Channel 4 have had full UK rights to Friends.

Though for the last couple of seasons they did it so that E4 was only a day in advance (showing thursdays with Channel 4 on Fridays) rather than 6 months, so by the time second chance sunday came around, viewers had already seen it twice (and I also believe they were repeated sunday afternoon on T4), I wonder why they didn't go for a week in advance, oh well too late now.

No, C4 had the first two or three series. Sky One then leapt in after it had developed a major UK fanbase and bought the first-run rights to series 4 (I think), but C4 put in huge bids and got the show back for later seasons.

What about it's increasing investment in high quality documentary programming, shown in primetime slots?

Plus I told a few people in my Media Studies group that the show is going to be on Five, and they went mad, asking "Why is it on there?!?!"

You would have thought being in a Media Studies class would have taught them at least *something* about how telly works...

Yeah, but if Sky One had it even fewer people could receive it.

Just saw an ident on Five promoting the Friends spin-off Joey.
It features Matt LeBlanc sitting behind the table with the letters ivef in standing on the table.
He looks at it, and moves the F to the front so it forms the Five logo.
However, not long after that, in all his wisdom he moves he I to the end...
