Can anybody tell me why I can't watch TV when my Digihome set top box recieves listings and software updates? I can then put my mum at ease with whatever information you provide. Thank you.

Presumably because it only has one tuner so when it's tuned to the frequency downloading the listijgs and software you can't be tuned to something else.

Shouldn't they do this overnight though?

If the receiver uses the 4TV EPG then it needs to be tuned to the multiplex carrying those listings, as unlike the standard Freeview 7 day EPG which is carried on all Freeview muxes, the 4TV EPG is only carried on one mux. Similarly the Software Update channel is operated by the BBC on one of their muxes, so the receiver needs to be tuned to that to receive them.

Noggin, the listings I use are the InView Teletext Extra listings service.

Yep - I suspect those, like the 4TV listings, are not using the core Freeview data that is broadcast on all muxes and available whichever channel you are watching, and instead are proprietary and require a re-tune to the mux carrying them for them to be updated.

Before the Freeview EPG arrived a number of manufacturers impatiently implemented their own proprietary guides, however these are probably redundant now we have the full Freeview 7 day EPG (though some of the proprietary guides are 14 day?), particularly as the Freeview+ additions allow for some good metadata linking, and dynamic updates.

Thanks for the information Noggin and it is greatly received.
