Engineering work alert: Emley Moor Transmitter Works
From Monday 14 April 2010 for around 2 months, transmissions from Emley Moor will be from a reserve antenna which may affect reception for some viewers. This is in preparation for digital switchover work and signals are liable to reduced power and short interruptions, for which we apologise.

Might well have something to do with it (not sure if it explains the caption on C4 analogue though)

Interesting - has this style of caption, generated at the tx site when the incoming programme feed fails, finally been replaced?

Slightly o/t, but I was talking to a guy from Arqiva, based at Emley Moor, a few weeks ago, and was trying to wangle a trip up to the top of the tower. He said that there's so much work going on up there at the moment in preparation for DSO that they weren't allowing any visitors until it's complete next year. Apparently there are cables everywhere up there right now.

(Or maybe he was just fobbing me off!)

Apparantly, this work will now not be completed until the end of August at the earliest. It was due to be finished two months from mid April (i.e. about now).

Probably not, I was up the top of the tower in September, it was getting rather 'busy' up there then.

Nice to know I wasn't being fobbed off then!

Just out of interest, can anyone explain what exactly it is they need to do in preparation for DSO, and why so much cabling needs to be done? I know a lot of main transmitter sites have also undergone a lot of work. But with them already broadcasting DTT, I would have presumed all the relevant feeds and connections are already there, and it would just be a case of switching off the analogue transmitters and turning up the power of the DTT transmissions and remapping the frequencies. Evidently that's not the case, so what else is it they're doing?
