And its on SDN!!
My SDN Mux is still crap!! Cant watch TV travel shop!!! Still better than SDN putting more Shopping on DTT.
Interesting that such a good channel like this is on SDN, which as we know is not part of Freeview. i would have thought Crown Castle would love a big name channel like this for Channel 22.
Yay! Finally a channel that has more mainstream programming which isnt connected to an existing analogue channel! Ftn comes close but the only program i watch on that is Dilbert.
Plus with Sky Travel taking the entertainment route, it paired with this new Disney channel should produce an enormous amount of interest in Freeview and hopefully attract some more new channels on the platform. Film channel anyone?
Seeing that Disney own ABC, will we see any of their back catalogue?
Hopefully . They may need to get permission for broadcasting some stuff on Digital Terrestrial. Unless it doesnt apply to ABCs homegrown stuff . Does ABC show imports/non-homegrown stuff .
We may need to wait until something is more certain. For all we know the story in Media Guardian could be wrong or the deal could fall through. Remember CBM? Hope it goes ahead though, how it can start in the 'winter'. Its a bit soon to get a whole new channel set up CBM took ages and then got shut down, Crown Castle probably got bored and shut them down
CBM was an entirely new channel. Disney aren't exactly a novices when it comes to this.
True, but i doubt that they could plan, set-up, make idents and branding for, and launch a channel in a few months unless they had always planned it and have only released information about it now, when a launch is near certain.
This was posted on Digital Spy by Tugger4FV so i thought people may have not seen it and would like to read it here:
A breakthrough deal by the Walt Disney Co. in the United Kingdom will give the giant entertainment entity its first wholly owned, nonbranded broadcast operation outside of the United States, it was confirmed Thursday.
Under the deal, Disney will launch and own a general-entertainment, free-to-air channel in the United Kingdom on the Freeview digital platform. The new channel, set to go on the air in the winter, has yet to be named -- but it will not be a branded Disney service, sources said. Disney already has a branded pay TV service in the United Kingdom.
Word of the deal emerged Thursday night in Cannes on the eve of the big MIPCOM international TV market. A spokesman for Disney, contacted at the market, said: "Yes, we have reached an agreement with SDN to launch a channel on their Freeview service. It will be advertiser-supported and will launch this winter. More details will be released nearer that time."
Freeview is marketed by DTV Services, a company run by its three shareholders -- the BBC, Crown Castle International and BSkyB.
Sources pointed out that though Disney has partial ownership interests in several European broadcast operations -- including RTL in Germany and GM TV in the United Kingdom -- this is the first fully owned general-entertainment channel to be launched by Disney in the global market.
Freeview is still a relatively small operation in terms of subs, but it has a high profile in the United Kingdom and carries such services as BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4; Sky Sports News; ITV News; Sky Travel; Sky News; U.K. History and other top branded services. It is understood to have subs in the region of 2 million, but analysts expect that number to grow considerably in the coming years.
In all, the Freeview service provides as many as 30 free digital TV and radio channels plus a range of interactive services. It is broadcast from transmitters and received via a rooftop antenna. "For Disney, this represents a significant investment in a relatively new way of distributing content to new customers," a source said.
The deal provides Disney with a wholly owned broadcast service in the United Kingdom despite the fact that non-EU companies are currently prevented from taking over U.K. broadcasters. The Freeview deal places Disney on an existing, locally owned digital service while still giving ownership rights to Disney, sources added. Although foreign ownership rules will be relaxed soon in the United Kingdom, outside companies will still be expected to prove a commitment to local programming.
Sources say the new U.K. Disney-owned channel will carry programming from Disney's ABC in the United States -- including such daytime dramas as "All My Children" and "General Hospital." Also on the programming agenda for the new channel will be sports programming from Disney-owned ESPN. It also will air Disney movies. Initially, the new service will operate on a 12-hour-a-day basis, sources said.

Not wishing to be a damp squib, but I wouldn't get too excited. FTN was supposed to be a brilliant channel and did come from quite a respected provider, but it's turned out to be pap. Dilbert is one of the few gems on there - but there are only 30 episodes of Dilbert and with FTN just showing them round and round it'll very quickly get boring.
The new channel might sound good coming from Disney, but I'm not willing to get enthused by it until I see a schedule.

I don't intend to get to excited, but there must be at least one program on there worth watching, won't there?
FTN should show some older archive programs from LivingTV like Most Haunted, I want to see that. Unless it has and i missed it . Also fan of Charmed which is on Living (Ahh, Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan, so many lovely women, so little time ) and they could at least show old ones, they would still have the new ones to premiere on DSAT.
