What will happen to SIXTV after the change-over to digital?

I have an ONdigital box.

I'm wondering, would that become an antique in gazillion-years' time?

Probably an antique in 100. Mine is still going strong after 6 years unlike some of the newer ones purchased.
We don't know what will happen to local channels like SIX TV. It could be the case that Ofcom decide to re-allow RSL licences to broadcast digital multiplexes as appose to analogue, or capacity reserved for them. However, the 17 existing licence holders may not get the contract again.

Ofcom are currently looking into how RSL's will operate after DSO, though nothing has been decided yet. They best had, as DSO is getting closer and there are a fair few. Manchester's RSL; Channel M is broadcasting on NTL and on Sky nationwide, as well as Terrestrial. Hopefully Ofcom will see sense with the RSL's.

It will be an antique, but it'll be dead. I'm no DTT expert but after DSO the old OnD/ITV boxes won't be able to work whatsover, they're changing the transmission which OnD/ITV boxes won't be able to cope with, where as newer DTT boxes will be able to.

Though anyone feel free to add or correct my information here.

Some early ONDigital boxes were "2k" only - whereas all modern boxes are "2k/8k". The UK DVB-T system is currently 2k (apart from the HD Trial in London which is 8k) - but the plan is to move all services to 8k at DSO, as it is a more robust system. (It also allows for better use of SFNs - or Single Frequency Networks - just as the National DAB services use)

As for digital RSLs - I guess Ofcom will have to legislate to shoehorn them into existing muxes somehow? (Probably at 544x576 or 352x576 at a very low bit rate?)

BBC Local Radio stations are mandated to be carried on some local commercial DAB muxes in a similar manner.

These TV exec types are so gullible when it comes to marketing:

Quote:
The strapline, "Free TV Land - where great TV is free" has been created, the company says, to "create a stronger ongoing relationship between the viewer and Freeview by emphasising the values that consumers love the most."

Quote:
"Free TV Land celebrates everything that viewers love about Freeview. We're seen as the home of free digital TV and our new creative gives us a more defined personality and identity, enabling us to build a stronger ongoing relationship with our viewers."

The "Free TV Land" slogan will if anything only confuse viewers. Freeview has already built up a strong brand, and though of course it still needs promotion, I can't see how this campaign will help.
