bear in mind that there is still a BBC Radio Humberside, when said county no longer exists. In fact the station came on air with that name before it even existed.

Yes it is. In fact, BBC Radio Lancashire are based in Blackburn.

err no its not.....

the borough has taken down all LCC signs and replcaed them with Blackburn with darwen signs - its only when you leave Blackburn that once comes across LCC signs and Bolton/Bury signs.

Blackburn with Darwen, for the last 6 years has had the same autonomy as Bolton, Bury, Wigan, Rochdale, Oldham, etc... They officially do not belong to a county.

I was born in Bolton, Lancashire, my sister was born in Bolton, Greater Manchester but my nephew was born in Bolton. But due to belongingness (I know that isn't a word but its the descript yet!) people do tend to put/use the county name they were bron/grew up in.

Oh right. Funny how Blackburn is listed on the Lancashire County Council website then.

Errr yes it is.

Blackburn with Darwen is a borough council, but that still doesn't alter the fact the area belongs to the county of Lancashire.

To requote what I said....

So Bolton is still in Lancashire then??? I say it is because I was born ther, but my sister says Bolton, Greater Manchester. Neither is correct but at same time we are both correct because of where we were born.

Don't forget...

Blackpool is autonomous from Lancashire, but everyone associates it with Lancashire
Blackburn with Darwen in autonomous (just need to look at the services provided in the town, are they provided by LCC or by BwD. Even the bus stops have been changed as they used to say Lancashire but now say BwD)
All the old Lancashire towns that became part of Greater Manchester are autonomous to each other
All the old Cheshire towns that became part of Greater Manchester are autonomous from each other
Warrington is autonomous from Cheshire.

One can say that they are part of a County as that's they way they have been brought up/or know no different, BUT it is no longer the case for many major towns in the North West (as shown above) are they are seperate fromthe countrys and belong to themselves.

I'm sorry I hate to be a bore on this but this is rubbish.

I don't doubt many places both in the North West and across the rest of the UK have more identity with the increased emphasis on borough and district councils.

But this does still does not alter the fact it is STILL part of a county. Blackburn with Darwen does happen to be a unitary authority which are considered somewhat "seperate" from the main county in terms of administration though some services will still be administered by Lancashire CC.

But anyway it is - nuff said. Laughing

Blackburn with Darwen is a unitary authority, so is not part of Lancs administratively; however BWD is still in Lancs ceremonially, therefore geographically. In England the geographic and ceremonial counties are the same difference (check out Wikipedia and Guiness Book of World Answers .

On the same note (and from the above sources), the metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester are effectively unitary authorities too.

However, because GM is metropolitan county (county council disbanded in 1986), its boroughs still pool together to decide on transport issues, policing, fire service etc-- which is why some people still class it as a county proper (look in Phillips-OS atlases).

That said, GM still exists as a ceremonial and geogrpahical county.

Check out these....

Widnes is in the unitary authority of Halton Borough, but it is geogrpahically/ceremonially part of Cheshire. Warrington is also a unitary authority, but geographically/ceremonially part of Chesire too.
