that's because, by default media player doesn't use the windows api to draw on the window canvas; it access the video card directly via direct x.
you need to do the following:
start windows media player
tools (menu option) -> options (menu option) -> performance (tab)
look for the groupbox titled 'video accerelation' and drag the slider to 'none'
