Foreign TV Formats that could work on UK television

On British TV we have seen TV formats that have originated in the UK and are later shown in localized version such as Pop Idol and SCD or we have formats that have been tried and tested in other countries with shows that become hits like Dragons Den, The Apprentice, Are You Smarter than a Ten Year Old or are flops such as The Farm or Unanimous.

What other foreign formats do you think would work on TV over here? The only one I can think of that could work here is The Amazing Race.

In America they have a programme called 'The Benny Hill Show'. I think that could work quite well in the UK. It would have to be adapted slighty for the British sense of humor though.

Does the UK have Thank God You're Here?

Possibly the funniest show known to man.

Paul Merton will be hosting that for ITV at some point in 2008 Smile

Should be pretty good if ITV don't ruin it

ITV have picked it up.

Ah!

Any chance of editing the title to "programme" formats, rather than "TV" formats?

I came here to join in an interesting discussion on NTSC and SECAM.

TGYH is in its third series/season in Australia - it's been quite successful - although the US version (which put a much heavier emphasis on big name stars AIUI) wasn't quite as popular and was axed pretty early on.

Not a format strictly speaking, but will/has The Nominees (aka We Can Be Heroes: Finding The Australian of the Year) be/been shown on TV in the UK? It's very funny. Chris Lilley's (the creator/actor) more recent series Summer Heights High was also very good.

I also remember hearing somewhere that The Chaser's War on Everything is being repackaged for an international audience - you'd probably best know them as the people who took a fake motorcade through APEC security with a faux-Osama Bin Laden inside. That's another good one from Australia..

itv2 made a version of the amazing race (called the race) with keith duffy in 2001, back in the days when itv2 was only on on/itv digital, so it was a flop, and did not return for a second series?

i do think it would be great if another channel did make a uk version.

also, it would help if another channel showed the american version too, instead of it being tucked away on living 2, for only fans who already know about it to bother to watch!

Another problem is that it is quite expensive to produce compared to other reality shows since they go to various location around the world. A UK version would be a great Saturday Night show on BBC One or ITV1.

Another TV format which could work over here is Iron Chef. Considering the success of cookery shows like Masterchef or Britain's Best Dish I think a UK Iron Chef could have similar success.

Think Amazing Race is much more BBC Two, Channel Four or possibly Five than BBC One or ITV1.
