To look at them I can only presume they are real flags in a wind tunnel in slow motion - I can't imagine there's much computer-trickery afoot ... or am I wrong?

Does anyone know because I too would like to be able to make my own! (I have too much time on my hands!!)

Real Flags were used! I sent an email to News24 some time ago asking the same question. They said a number of real flags were filmed and taken into post-production. You can see that they're real with the shear randomness of their movement (sorry that sounds so crap!) especially during the long sequence of a single flag during the old countdown. If any body wants a JPG file of all the various flags used on News 24 in a patchwork quilt stylee then email me. Cheers.

Lambie-Nairn were the creators of the flag graphics originally. I did email them some time ago about the flags and asked how they were created etc and how the various designs came about but I didn't receive a reply - bummer! Their website is
http://www.lambie-nairn.com/ which does contain a small pic of the red, white and blue flag on one of its pages but nothing else that i've found.
I think generally that the flags were one of the most creative graphic sequences for news that i've seen. I would really like some flags material used by BBC World before it went corporate as the flags featured very heavily in its overall presentation.
