I doubt whether that would be suitable, as RTL2 already exists in Europe (Luxembourg) and would cause confusion.

Not in Letzebuerg.

RTL2 (RTL deux) is a national commercial radio network in France.

RTL II (RTL svie) is a national commercial television network in Deutschland.

So surely there is no reason why there could not be an RTL two in England?

Looking through RTL's corporate web site it seems that the only channels not under the RTL name are either specialist channels or channels not 100% owned by RTL, and now they have full ownership of Channel 5, perhaps a name change is on the cards?

Surely the obvious name change would be RTL5?

I think you are jumping the gun with this renaming of five RTL. Clearly it’s not the plan in the next few years otherwise they wouldn’t launch five.2 as "five.2", it makes no marketing sense.

I could see it being more practical after the switch off, when "five" doesn’t really mean anything. However then they loose the known five brand and it would just become "another channel", so it’s a toss up.

How about five TOO?

...Perhaps a little too cheesy.

Funny you should say that - Cartoon Network's new channel is called Cartoon Network Too.

Cartoon Network going down the Roobarb and Custard route... as that seems to be called "Roobarb and Custard Too" these days...

Talking of Roobarb and Custard, didn't Five say they were going to launch a Milkshake channel for the kids as well? Whatever happened to that idea? (Admittedly it probably wouldn't be worth it, as half the stuff on Milkshake is already on other digital channels!)

Five 2 could well turn out to be a working title for the channel.

I’d think it is defiantly going to be called Five.2 because it’s stated in the latest "Ofcom Television Licence Issued" document.

TLCS - Channel 5 Broadcasting Ltd - Five.2
That doesn't confirm anything. It could still be a working title.

Surely it would make sense to rename five as five.1, like ITV renamed to ITV1 when their multichannel empire began?

I read that the new channel (five.2 or whatever it ends up being called), will include the Milkshake strand in its schedule. I expect it will be mainly Milkshake programming in daytime.

I find that Five have left it a bit late to start a multi-channel strategy and are only doing it because they have been underfire for not doing so.

I don't know what they'll find to put on the new channel, Five itself is hardly setting the world on fire and seems to be based on programmes Channel 4 made two years ago

Confirmed as Five.2

BBC News article:

Five readies for satellite launch

Five has been granted a licence for a second channel, the UK television regulator Ofcom has confirmed.
The network is planning to launch its first satellite and cable venture, general entertainment channel Five.2.

According to industry paper Broadcast, Five has secured funding from parent firm RTL for its expansion which will include children's programming.

Five is also reportedly vying for a slot available this month on free-to-watch digital service Freeview.

The major networks have been expanding their digital offerings in recent months.

ITV has launched a new male-targeted channel ITV4 and Channel 4 has started entertainment-based More4.

Last month Sky Three, which features programmes already seen on Sky One as well as original travel and lifestyle shows, replaced Sky Travel on Freeview.

Sky's free digital satellite TV service, which offers 140 channels for a one-off fee, faces competition next year from a rival operation set up by the BBC and ITV.

This article doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know, it states they've been awarded a license by ofcom to broadcast a new channel provisionally called five.2, and that they're trying to get a slot on freeview.

I think BBC news have just taken a while to cotton on!
