So ten years on, what do you think of Five?

A wasted opportunity. I reckon they ought to have made it a terrestrial sports channel. So all football matches, snooker tournaments, cricket would have gone on Five-- rather than constantly interrupting the other four channels' schedules!

Minor sports could then have been used to fill the graveyard slots overnight. Obviously there would have to be news too, to help fulfil PSB requirements.

Prison Break is great, the only thing I watch on five.

They should bring back 'The Mole' - that was the best show on TV back in 2000 / 2001

Hmm....time for a positive opinion.

What does Five provide that no-one else does?

Live, free-to-air American sport.

I thought you were going to say something positive! Wink

Yes you may scoff, but to us insomniac MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS fans it's a godsend Smile

Prison Break is really excellent. But people dont seem to rave about it like they do with likes of Lost. Personally I much prefer Prison Break.

I liked The Mole too - an excellent reality tv show. A shame they only did a couple of series.

Channel 5 was not in my area until one summer (either 1997 or 1998) when tuning in my TV I picked up a test broadcast, watched 100% once or twice during that. The first programme I watched was the 8.30pm news in Somerset during 1997. I thought Channel 5 was great in the early days and I was impressed with their schedule and new programming they brought but the channel's gone downhill not what it once was.

I hardly think that it was Five's fault Robot Wars died - the format had already been ruined by the production company during its BBC2 run and it was already on its way when they offloaded it.

I disagree the format was ruined, after all it had several more series on 2 even after the presentation style was changed. ISTR it was still getting 3-5m viewers across the whole week (including repeats), Jane Root only dropped it because she personally disliked the programme.

Anyway five... erm... It's not the same without boobs.

I watched Channel 5 almost all of the time when it started, but saying that ten years ago I only had access to BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4, so to me a then ten year old having an extra channel on TV was like a complete breath of fresh air to me. It also seemed rather Sky-ish when it launched as I remember they constantly promoted they had 'Big' films at 9pm Nightly, and News on the hour, every hour, although they never had updates at 4.00pm, 5.00pm and 10.00pm, the last one was usually 12.10am ISTR. It was a rather novel thing, they didn't too bad on such a small budget.

If Tim Vine makes it big in Fame Academy, any chance of Whittle coming back? Laughing

[Advertisement] Take a look on my YouTube bit, I have a clip of a Channel 5 News Update from May 1997, at 6.00am on a Saturday, probably something no-one watched. [/Advertisement]

Oh does anyone remember Jail Break? I personally liked that. I use to watch it in the early morning, cant remember it was repeat, live or what though.

I used to watch Channel 5 regularly (almost every day) when they screened Prisoner: Cell Block H between 1997 and 2001. Since then I have very rarely watched Five or their digital channels. I am more interested in what plans Channel 4 have to mark their 25th birthday in November this year!

The 9pm movies. God, some of them were crap - but much missed though!

That's the thing - even with a crap movie as a channel C5 stood out more with a 9pm movie than it does now with CSI!
