The original Dutch run of The Golden Cage didn't do particularly well in terms of ratings, but sure managed to spark controversy with questions being asked in parliament and all sorts. Quite possibly exactly what Desmond and Five are hoping for?

But if nobody watches (which apparently nobody did as it was insufferably dull) then there is no money so whats the point?

Hey, I watched it every now and again when it was on Talpa/Tien (and then after RTL took the channel over moved to RTL5).

Yes most of the time it was tedious and boring - just as much as Big Brother was (and yes that finished in The Netheralnds a couple of years ago!). But it have some good moments.

In fact since it was dropped RTL5 had found it difficult to find a replacement trying various shows in the slot. The current show being Take Me Out and yes that is quite popular at the moment! (just a pity they do not have the catchphrase - no likey, no lighty)

Thought they'd already "stalled"?

Good old Media Guardian only a month behind the Big Brother fansites with that one then. Anyone who watched the show could see things had changed in the final week when after a few weeks of switching to phrases like "celebrating 10 years of BB" they firmly returned to the "last ever" corner midway through Ultimate BB.

Although on the last Sunday BBLB they were still making riddles referring to it returning "on the other side" for Bob Righter. I don't think Channel 4 actually knew either way at that point.

Although C4 must've been aware of rumours about negotiations between C5 and Endemol, I doubt they were under any obligation to fuel them during their programmes. Any 'riddles' were probably just to keep fans watching C4/E4 in the expectation of finding something out.

Even if the deal had been signed and sealed before the final night, I don't think that C4 would've wanted to encourage their audience to switch to a rival channel in 2011.

I don't recall the BBC advising viewers where they could find future episodes of Neighbours at the end of their final broadcast on BBC One.
