SPERM IDENT???

Ha ha ha!!! This is the funniest TV presentation I have heard for a while!!! Ha ha ha!!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Should be fun to see what happens!!! However, dropping the word "five" from the idents seems a little stupid seeing as "five" is the number of the channel and its logo is all that identifies the channel in what is already a great package of idents they currently have.

Fair enough, you could drop the word GRANADA from Granada idents, as was the case from 1994 to 1999 and put a Granada logo up on the screen. So to could you put a Yorkshire Chevron on the screen and not bother putting Yorkshire Television at the bottom of the screen.

But dropping the name "five" and replacing it with a sperm and an emotive word, does not really sum up the channel at all and may leave many viewers confused as to what they are watching. Without any logo or identifying words at all, this is surely the most backwards step in presentation for a long time.

You might as well just show a clip of some of some dog turd with the words "UGH" before a programme to get an equally unimpressive channel ident for Five.

Very poor logic here... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I don't really see the big deal, I don't think it matters whether or not you include the logo in the ident these days, many people will know what channel they're watching and I'm sure the announcer will remind you during the idents. I imagine the logo would still be used in the break-bumpers and promos - after all, you see those more than you see the idents.

I can't see this lasting for a long while, I think it could isolate people especially the elderley or casual viewers who may think the channel has been renamed.

God knows what they will call five.2 & five.3 now then

Most people still call it Channel 5 despite its previous rebrand. Ok so the names aren't different but its the same way alot of people reffered to Meridian and TVS as Southern TV and most people calling the channel ITV even though it's now ITV1.

I don't see why everyone's getting so worked up about the sperm ident. It's no more than you would see on a science programme or a report on the news!! It's only meant as a bit of light-hearted fun.

I had half expected a new look soon, actually, ever since I saw the new drama promos. The text used is smaller and less bold than usual, and the logo is also smaller. It looks much classier. I expect the new trailer endboards will be more subtle as well.

The idents look promising, although I do like the current set. It sounds like they won't be so much different in concept, apart from the different words. I would personally favour the channel logo being somewhere on the screen, even if it were smaller at the bottom right. But it could work. I will reserve judgement until I see them, but they sound like they could be good.

I'm most looking forward to seeing how the rest of the package changes, though. I think they, if anything, could do with a revamp.

Hopefully this means that they won't do anything stupid, like calling it 'five.2.'. This also could be an indicator, showing that they are disattaching themselves from the 'channel 5' name, rearing them up for a new identy, to go with their new channels :s! Will their new channels replace top-up tv. I read somewhere (i think) that 5 rented out thier channels to top up tv.

I have an idea for 'c.5's new channels:

Channel 5. - main channel.

five.2 - follow up shows. stuff like itv2's xtra factor.

five.3 - films and drama.

live@five - shows that are covering their reality tv shows, and other shows, that unfold all of the time. Such as live coverage of back to reality.

five.4u - five's watchdog channel. ie 'five.4'.

Five always have strange idents, when young kids look at this they may say "look mommy: tadpoles".

don't like these at all . for a channels identity to be effective, it needs to be consistant. five are trying to be bold by doing this but with getting rid of the logo too, well, i doubt it will last. five were going pretty well with their previous package too. Rolling Eyes

Lets not all jump to conclusions before we've seen them now.

My guess is that there are quite a lot of idents which will then be scheduled appropriately. Five do alot of medical and science programmes these days and the sperm ident woud sit easily in front of those.

Also, as Five has built its identity around words and its font, subliminally the idents should echo the word Five in one's mind. ( as was said previously, like the B&H and Silk Cut ads)
It's very traditional to always go for the obvious -spell out the channel name in big letters etc etc ...tv stations have been doing that for 50 + years...so it will be interesting if Five can pull this off....
I say - lets wait and see ...and then judge ....

One thing's for sure, Five is in a process of transition and has come on in leaps and bounds in the last 3 years or so ...better programmes, classier identity and announcers ..very different to its tacky early days. Of all the terrestrials it has been the most interesting one to watch evolving ...
...and Prison Break - which by all accounts is brilliant ...should be worth a look .
