The one silver lining is that they haven't included the word "Channel" anywhere.

The only member of the "Channel 5" brand to use the word "Channel" will be Channel 5 itself. 5USA and 5*, I doubt, will be called Channel 5USA or Channel 5*.

Except for Five HD, which will probably become Channel 5 HD.

Good point, forgot about that!

God, and I thought the C5 logo was bad. A real shame the Fiver brand is being dropped - IMO it's got one of the best packages of any digital channel at the moment.

That 5* logo just keeps reminding me of HTV's 'Star Quality'

The Wright Stuff has been out of sync for over 40 minutes now, glad it wasn't my TV.

A clue to the new font to be used after the rebrand? The OKTV promo and the new one for the Gadget show are both using a new font (and both start on 14th Feb).

Confirmed by Production manager at Channel 5, its Gotham

Also, may I ask why everyone likes the current FIVE package so much? The October 2008 package was far better, more refined in its presentation but more expressive in style. The current one get drowned out by the size of the logo.

I'm trying not to get too disillusioned about all this; at the end of the day I watch very little C5/year. But I defy any pres enthusiast not to feel even the teensiest bit saddened by the callousness in which an aspiring brand has been bulldozed.

In many ways it's absolutely hilarious to see the new owners follow BBC2's "step-by-step guide to destroying a channel aesthetic in just 6 months" (though at least that particular revamp had a genuine purpose, albeit a hopelessly misguided one).

But then you are reminded of this. It seems like only yesterday the October 2008 rebrand came to fruition, tasked with replacing a stellar and well-liked package and brand. For the first time, the channel expressed real boldness and self-confidence through its on screen presentation; seemingly no longer willing to follow trends but to set them.

The point is (and before this turns into an essay to make Tumble Tower blush) the above video and the package that followed left a lasting impression of an ambitious young channel wanting to move forward, respectful of its history but now looking to the future. And it's a real shame to see how it's ended up 2 1/2 years later, with a notorious pornographer as its owner, dogmatically punching "reset" to return his station to its feeble, insecure former self and (to top it off) a lunch break red-top masthead for a new logo, possibly the most appalling use of Photoshop since...

I shall now prepare my proverbial hat for eating when Desmond unveils the best on screen presentation package seen in 20 years on Monday.

Really gutted about loosing the FIVE 'action motion feeling' type idents, with the clouds, cycling car, horses etc. But this last one has just been as good and I am not keen on the '5' nor 'channel' being used. I think for a long time, I will purposely call it FIVE.

I too would be surprised if this next revamp is the best so far.

My opinion of the current pres package is 'meh' and so I am looking forward to the change.

Wouldn't have been ideal but "5IVER" would have been better than "5*". Indeed can the various EPGs even handle the "*" considering they seem to struggle with pound signs!

Well Sky did the registered trademark R for the MTV channel with that name so they most probably will have a * in their character set.

Some Freeview and Freesat boxes can only display characters from a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and -, :, ., , and " symbols such as the Nokia STB (Freeview). The ® symbol is in the extended character set that the box can't produce, so it will show either a ? symbol or # symbol.

For instance, on S4C on Freeview (Nokia) the program "Tân Sam" (Fireman Sam) is shown as "TAn Sam" as it doesn't recognise the roofed 'a' (or Lower Case Latin A with Circumflex).

Isn't most of the software written on Linux for the boxes and then scaled horrifically down?
