Well hopefully Channel 4 get the rights to the Cricket again, their coverage was excellent.
Well, I can see them not renewing the cricket contract when it comes up again in 2012. Big issue for the ECB, there.

Well for quite some time Five has really been the home of imports. From America like Flashforward, and Australia with Home & Away.
From what he's briefly said so far, it sounds like he's interested in trying to make more British content. Everything he listed was a UK format.

I'm sure they all could, but none of them currently directly supply broadcasts to a third party - they aren't news suppliers. I doubt any other them would be willing to set up such an arm and then bid for a contract, especially one as small as Five News. Remember it wouldn't be Channel 5 that went to a company and asks them to provide a service, it's put up to tender.
Pardon my ignorance, but why wouldn't Five get to produce its own news if it wanted to, just like any other European broadcaster its size? In other words, what's the advantage of having this system of outside bidders for news content? (After all, there is no tender for, say, an official outside supplier of soap operas.)

Express Newspapers themselves
could
try to produce the news on the Channel, relying on News Agencies for footage, a limited UK news operation would be easy for them to set up, it's not as if they have houts to fill each day.

The Sky News interview, they seem to have edited out the first part.

A lot of sites are trying to butcher him already, saying it'll be nothing but a porn channel. I doubt someone with the money he has will be completely one track minded.
Plus he's spoken to The Guardian and said nothing will be leaving the station, just content will be added.
The interesting question from the interview on Sky was the query on BBC making content for Five, and him being open to the idea. Yeah he's only been around for an hour, but accepting external help isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Indeed they could, but as I said earlier in this thread, the news operations of the Daily Express and Daily Star have been cut to the bone (hence the appalling standard of the 'journalism' in them*) so it's not just a point of adding it onto their existing newsgathering. It all depends on how much it would cost for them to set up something themselves compared with getting one of the 2 existing providers to do it.
Setting up a newsroom that just churns over agency footage (router journalism as I once heard someone call it) is very cheap and easy but doesn't produce very good content. However that is very similar to what he's done to his newspapers - cut costs and increase profits at the expense of quality.

They could, but if they wanted to change outside supplier they would shop around - i.e. offer it out. The reason why Five haven't done their own news so far is because they are a publisher-broadcaster, they make nothing themselves (although previous owners of Five* have made programmes for them), and of course doing news themselves is very expensive
Other programmes are different as there's a creative element. The programmes that get chosen get on air because they like the idea. Although channels do often put out programme strands to tender, when it launched Channel 5 needed a soap, a nightly chat show and a daytime show and all these were put out for production companies to pitch their ideas
*Oddly enough at launch one of which was United News and Media, then owners of The Daily Express!

I think five needs a relaunch.
the programmes are to cheep and cheerful. I would keep neighbours, home and away (simply because of the popuality ) and also Fifth Gear and Football on five.
They need more entertainment shows to compete like they are with don't stop believing and a saturday night line-up which will rival the other channels.
the news is also in need of a relaunch at the moment theres one main programme and lil mini shows at lunch and through the night . Natasha isent working on there bring someone new in.
Get rid of Live at Studio five and replace it with the orignal idea five and friends with Natasha and Mathew Wright or another news show .
and get rid of all that american stuff ,

Spoken like a true TV executive.
You're basically saying "keep all the shows that I watch but get rid of all the other crap".
Don't ever apply to run a TV network, just stick with Sky+.

I agree
but five has potential in my view and has some good shows and with a bit of work it would be popular
