Why was Channel 5 re-branded as "Five"? I have often wondered this - I can't remember reading or hearing why the branding was changed.

They have been presenting in LFSF using the long desk, I am finding it difficult to work out if its always in the studio or not.

The cut aways to the glass block never show the desk so you could be right in saying pre-recorded.

Maybe it was an attempt to shed the channel's reputation of the three F's and make it seem more modern. If so, they failed.

I wouldn't say it was a complete fail. If anything they have the best presentation in terms of idents etc of all five major channels. And their selection of programmes has risen, and is obviously the one place to go for Aussie soaps Home & Away and Neighbours, which have always been decent ratings winners.

But I think it's still generally considered as being a rubbish channel full of porn at night. And of course, no one refered to it as just 'Five' either. IMO they need to get rid of any reference to the number 5 in their name and start afresh with a totally different new name.

I urge all of you to pick up a copy of this week's Private Eye magazine; who devote a full page to Dirty Des' purchase - and notably how he should fail most of the quality and suitability thresholds that Ofcom require to own a PSB channel, although somehow doesn't.

And how it implies he may be using the digital sister channels he's now got to fill Freeview with subscription hardcore pornography during night time hours.

Perhaps his intention all along...

Until they moved to Five.

The initial rebrand was about trying to move away from it's launch image but frankly it backfired and Five lost it's identity. "Channel 5" viewers weren't particularly interested in the more serious documentaries and art programming Five initially focused on, whilst the sort of viewers who may have been wouldn't dare be found watching C5, so they kind of got a double hit.

I didn't realise some of the programming that started when the channel's name became "Five" was different to many of the programmes they had previously shown. To be honest, I've never been a regular viewer of Five, although from what I have seen more recently, the channel doesn't seem that bad. I know what you mean about their launch image - I can also remember that when they first started they were showing kids programmes that were old TV-AM shows from nearly a decade before (like Dappledown Farm).

That's odd you heard that, I was watching Channel Five HD on Sky at the time. I didn't get that in my region (I'm not sure how many they have, but I don't think they have different CAs).

I've never heard anyone mention 'Channel 5/Five HD' since it's been available. In fact, I've rarely seen the HD DOG appear on Ch 171.
