As I said before, I'm like that about more than just TV. If someone still called HSBC "Midland Bank", or still called Morrisons "Safeway", it'd niggle me too.

oh now I'm the opposite. I forcefully refer to the local Safeways as Safeway and refer to my Virgin Media box as Telewest. If I could get hold of a telewest branded cover for my box on the wall I would have it fitted in seconds.

Although I'm very pro-change, any change still has to be "right" - not any old half-baked idea (again, e.g. "C3NE").

Therefore, although in principle I think a rebrand for Five Life could be a good move, "Fiver" definately isn't it. It sucks (and not in a good way Wink ).

Asda potentially becoming "Wal-Mart" is a good example of a bad move. The fact is that using "Mart" as a contraction for "Market" is too distinctly American. We never have, and never will, readily use "Mart" in Britain. Therefore the obviously American-sounding name "Wal- Mart " would be such a turn-off for British shoppers.

Presumably this is why, despite some newer Asda stores built since Wal-Mart ownership carrying the dual name "Asda Wal-Mart", a wider move towards phasing in the "Wal-Mart" name to existing Asda stores has never yet materialised (save for a very small "part of the Wal-Mart family" tag-line beneath the otherwise strictly-"Asda" logo). Thankfully.

Ha! I'm still chuckling to myself, fiver, what a ridiculous name..... I know everyone thought that about Dave, but thats a completely different kettle of fish. It is part of a different brand to UKTV, however, fiver, should surely have some sort of five branding?

Maybe Five US could be renamed "Fivest."

That just sounds stupid - why would they chose a name like that? (the name change of Fiver)

I can't believe how crap this decision is. As a few other members have said, this is purely a (poorly executed) rip-off of UKTV G2 / Dave. It worked for them - more people know about the channel now than did before the rebrand. But this offering from Five is pretty ridiculous. I was fairly happy with Five Life (even if it does sound like Five Live) but anything would have been better than 'Fiver'. How tacky. Couldn't they have gone for something a bit more mainstream: Five Extra, Five Plus, etc.?

One wonders whether this rebrand is just to get people talking about the channel? Could they be so devious as to adopt the most unsuitable name for a TV channel since BBC World Service Television News just to get people talking? We've already managed 5 pages, after all!

For sure, that's a large part of it. As people have said, they're obviously taking cues from Dave - which most definitely got people talking. And Five has nothing to lose, really - it's not as if Five Life has built up any loyal viewership to speak of, or that many people have even heard of it, to be honest. Fiver isn't the best name in the world, but as you say, it's getting people talking.

I don't really see how it's ridiculous at all.

Fiver = Five pounds = lowest amount in bank notes=cheap. I think this is just to get people talking.
