C4's duty office they said they weren't aware of any plans for Christmas idents and advised me to contact the Moving Picture Company who might know more.
I guess that's a line not worth pursuing then.

I completely disagree, Idents are the perfect way to promote the charities, after all Idents are technically mini promos anyway, they promote the brand/image.

No-one in their right mind can criticise the promotion of deserving causes, but an ident just isn't the right place to do it. Isn't that why we have commercial breaks? It's charities now, but it could be commercial products later.
Still, at least there's a generic version.

I for one am impressed by the ident, it's nice, lovely and well Christmassy. Soft music, dark city scape, christmas tree and lights lighting up. It's very nice. And at least five try, is there any reason that anyone can think of why Channel 4 don't want to have a Christmas ident, other than cost?
As for the charities, I think it's a nice idea, especially at this time of the year when the majority have their friends and family (even if you don't want some of them).

To be non-conformist, maybe?
This will be the third consecutive Christmas C4 hasn't bothered, and what went before was brought out of the cupboard for five years running. With every other terrestrial channel expected to have something, C4 will stand out this year for the wrong reasons.
Couldn't have put it better about Five's ident. You feel as though you are there.

Channel 4 makes a big deal out of being "non-traditional". That's whay their 3pm speech is usually quite provocative or humorous.
It follows that they don't want tinsel laden idents as that would surely make them "traditional".

I absolutely loved five's Christmas presentation a few years back, which really just involved Santa driving round in a car with "Driving Home For Christmas" playing. It was incredibly corny, but always made me chuckle when I saw it. They played out an extended version a few times that went on for aaaages.

In their formative years, C4 took Christmas idents almost as seriously as the BBC. They didn't bother in 1986 and 1987, then they joined in the spirit every year until 1998.

You wish.
My point being, if C4 wanted to avoid looking traditional - and they were far less mainstream in their early years - then it seems strange they bothered with Christmas pres back then.
