just as the title of this thread says, five has agreed to MTV programming rights - so some MTV shows will be making an appearance on the UK's fifth terrestrial channel in the not so distant future.

was browsing around and came across the report on media24/7, skydigi online -

Five will be showing some of MTV's favourite shows after it agreed a two year multi-million dollar deal granting Five the terrestrial rights to several MTV live events.

The deal allows Five to both air and customise MTV Europe's annual global music TV event, MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), the MTV Video Music Awards and MTV Movie Awards.

"This deal with Five demonstrates the added value of broadcasters' partnering with MTV to create customised programming, in order to deliver high quality, locally relevant content," said Debbie Back, senior vice president, International Programme Sales, MTV Networks International.

As MTV's new terrestrial partner, Five's Controller for Pop Features and Special Events, Sham Sandhu, said: "We're looking forward to making this deal a reality in order to bring these exciting, talked-about awards shows direct to our viewers. This will add to our already existing and increasing portfolio of special events on Five."

I guess they had a similar deal with C4 for the past few years - most the MTV Awards shows have been screened on T4.

They should try and get some of the tamer stuff in and then do a "Summer Mornings" type thing for teenagers during the school summer holidays - they could also put Dawson's Creek in there - and there's the lunchtime showing of Home & Away which could be made part of it too.

Would be nice if the Europe Music Awards etc. would actually be shown in the evening rather than in the morning/afternoon.

Well they're better than they were 8 years back. I think the aquisitions of big-name shows such as Joey and CSI helped, although poaching Home & Away from ITV was the real turning point for the channel - not only did they bring over 60% of the ITV audience (which isn't that bad considering the show was forced to leave UK screens for a year) but it also increased the ratings for their own soap, Family Affairs (which follows H&A) by 40%.

Five is stronger than ever these days.
