Five have parted company with their director of programmes Dan Chambers after a decline in audiences.

Five's all hours share is down 14% compared to October 2005. Year on year comparisons for the first 10 months of 2006 are little better - Five is down by nearly 11% on the same period of 2005.

The strategy to move upmarket and the introduction of arts and history documentaries is deemed to have failed. It's homegrown dramas and comedies have made virtually no impact and they haven't been able to produce a single stand out or recurring series.

What next for Five ? And what exactly have they given to the British TV landscape other than CSI & Home & Away ?

They didn't even give us that - a certain channel on number 3 did for many years before them.

To be fair five are trying.

They have a few problems. Firstly their documentaries are usually designed like American ones with recaps every half a second and annoying voice overs.

Their homegrown drama meanwhile is not promoted well enough. I *LOVED* Suburban Shootout but there was next to no promotion of it.

They've been treating H&A quite badly mind - including removing the omnibus, cutting content of episodes, and not showing the programme on analogue when there's footy on by moving the show to Five Life.

And there's never any promotion for it.

To be fair they havent treated it any worse than ITV did. And they only moved it off analogue due to footy on one occasion.

Home and Away and a few other imported shows like Prison Break are all I watch on five.SInce Family Affairs was axed ive not watched any homegrown shows on there.

I personally feel Five has lost all of it's identity now and really is little more than a satellite broadcaster on an analogue channel.

Though not unexpected, it is a shame it's nightly movies have pretty much vanished as they were a genuine alternative to the other channels.

The biggest loss though is it's news service - it's gone from being the fresh and innovative hourly service it was at launch to a couple of bulletins a day which are even blander than the others on TV!

Excuse me, but myself and other insomniacs are quick to remind people that Five is top notch for North American live sport - their coverage of baseball and the World Series is always excellent.

Beg pudding? I'm not responding to Brekkie's post, I'm merely pointing out one of Five's strengths.
