Why can't controllers and announcers merge so that the director, or whatever they're called, also speaks live?

I've noticed they've got a new black and white thing in the corner that goes round and round before the breaks. Haven't seen that for years.

I regularly see the cue-dot during ITV News..

Just a minor thing but I've also noticed the text font has changed (more simpler) on the ECPs.

And automation cockups are hardly new. I remember in the late 90s when Tyne Tees continuity first started coming from Leeds, there was one evening when all the pre-recorded announcements were out of step by one, so the 'Now on Tyne Tees, tonight's Coronation Street' anno was played over Corrie's end credits. And so it went on all evening.

I remember Granada having their fair share of cock-ups when they moved to Leeds, biggest one I remember was that we somehow had a programme menu for Tyne Tees appearing. Or when they pre-recorded the announcements for all 3/4 stations you'd occassionally hear about half a second of the Yorkshire music on a Granada ident (talking pre-1999 of course). Although they were few and far between after then, we got an ITV1 Border ident in 2002, that's pretty much it.

They maybe having a few teething troubles at Chiswick, but like any other organisation give them time and I'm sure they'll settle down.

It looks as though it's using ariel, or something similar rather than the ITV font, even though ITV2 are using the ITV font.

BBC Nations and BFBS do just that!

Yes, but the directors there are just fitting their bits around a network feed. The director in London is doing a lot more, including providing counts for the nations.

Yep - they're very common before breaks on live shows. They appear on the studio output to warn the various ITV playout areas that a break is coming shortly, and disappear at an exact time before the break.

The BBC used to use them for the opposite purpose - they were put on the channel output by the playout/presentation area to signal to a remote studio or OB that they were about to be put ON-AIR.

The BBC stopped using them for this purpose when digital TV arrived - because the delays inherent in digital TV transmission meant that the timing would no longer be accurate. BBC Sport now use them at Wimbledon to give other broadcasters a warning (30 seconds I think) that a clean court feed is about to become dirty (i.e. go from being a multilateral feed for all broadcasters, to a unilateral feed for the BBC - say when an on-court interview is about to happen)

Well the cut dot is appearing before every single break on the digital ITV1 channel now. I'd never seen it on digital until yesterday.
