Really and truthfully, if you weren't told, how would you know the difference?
yeah, i agree.
it's just irrational, but the knowledge that there is someone out there 'manning' the channel is just cosy.

there's something cosy about live continuity though. it makes u feel like ur not alone if it is just you and the the TV.
there's something cold and removed about recorded things.

Is this now the right time to start a new thread for all the forthcoming ITV automated cock-ups
we now have 2 prolific ones for the record - Football gaff (going to a break whilst game still in play) and now the corrie/bill cock-up
of course not fortgetting all the non-automated ones during ITV's reign of F1!

Generally speaking if things go right you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between live and recorded continuity. But with all this technology surprisingly enough blunders still occur. I happened to be awake in the early hours of this morning and happened to catch an opening announcement at 4am introducing the Learning Zone Schools Programme over the BBC-2 Sliding Roof symbol. This exact same announcement was then repeated word-for-word over the Learning Zone Ident Caption. I think that might be the dead giveaway to whether it is live or recorded still!

They've had an automated systems for well over a decade... have you forgotten that football match?

well if the closing minutes of corry are anything to go by with a "next the Bill" promo flashing over most of the screen, it's going to be fun with an automated system

There's always someone 'manning' the channel.... several people in fact. remember a TV channel is more than just an announcer

And automation cockups are hardly new. I remember in the late 90s when Tyne Tees continuity first started coming from Leeds, there was one evening when all the pre-recorded announcements were out of step by one, so the 'Now on Tyne Tees, tonight's Coronation Street' anno was played over Corrie's end credits. And so it went on all evening.
On the whole though, I don't think you can usually tell if continuity is pre-recorded, but you can tell when it's live (if that makes sense). The odd off-the-cuff comment relating to the closing scenes of a programme always highlights that announcements are live, and add a touch of friendliness.

I would have thought it would be done during 6.00-9.25am, but is GMTV's transmission moving aswell? Don't forget you have ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, CITV and Men & Motors to move aswell.
ITV2, 3 & 4 already moved, Citv and Men and Motors are still from the NTC and will remain there for the foreseeable future.

What usually happens when playout gets moved? (How I mean is how do they move playout without it disrupting the channel itself?)
