No they don't. What happens if it falls over overnight - they play a recorded apology - much the same as stv do during daytime

if it gets rid of interuptions during the end of programmes then that's a plus
but they need live continuity in case some thing goes wrong, like This Morning has broken

Alternatively they could just record "due to a technical difficulty we can't show what we're supposed to at the minute but normal programming will resume shortly. Sorry for any inconvenience" and pad it out with some cheesy music.

I've heard Chiswick called many things before, but 'pastures new' is streching the bounds of description somewhat

The actual switching isn't that difficult, after all it wasn't so long ago that playout was regularly switched between the South Bank, Euston and Camden. The channel(s) will be running in parallel from Chiswick already and it's just a case of putting it to air/line for real. They are probably stage it so that the channels go over in phases rather than all at once with the potenttial to roll back or delay the process if there's problems
I know that when the BBC first moved their pres areas in the mid 90's they fed the new one as a source on the old one, cut it to air and then permanently took it offline at another time

What usually happens when playout gets moved? (How I mean is how do they move playout without it disrupting the channel itself?)

I would have thought it would be done during 6.00-9.25am, but is GMTV's transmission moving aswell? Don't forget you have ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, CITV and Men & Motors to move aswell.

there's something cosy about live continuity though. it makes u feel like ur not alone if it is just you and the the TV.
there's something cold and removed about recorded things.
