She was instrumental in the introduction of the watershed and was an early campaigner against child pornography ....so don't judge too hastily ..unless you think that it doesn't matter what's shown when on tv.
Clearly, anyone that can see "filth" in most of the things that she did, has got to be
looking really hard
, and choosing to interpret things in a way that no level-headed person would. Therefore, ironically, she must've been the most filthy-minded person of all!
And of course the main flaw in her argument was that she herself watched all this stuff but yet wasn't affected!
Her National Viewers and Listeners Association continues as MediaWatch UK, the modern day Mary Whitehouse is a guy called John Beyer; MediaWatch-Watch reports on what they're up to.
I doubt they've been allowed to preview hthe programme tomorow so expect there might be 'outrage' from them one way or another
A fantastic performance by Julie Walters, as ever, and an excellent performance by Hugh Bonneville as Hugh Carleton-Greene.
I laughed out loud at the scene with the first meeting of the Clean Up National Tv group, and her sudden exclamation of "Cocks!" in the House of Commons, referring to the surname of the MP who brought her petition there. And if only someone like Carleton-Greene was still in charge at the BBC!
Well that was extraordinary. A stellar performance from Julie Walters. I didn’t expect the character to be so sympathetic, and while I didn’t agree with her moral values and sanctimonious nature I found myself rooting for her. A complete shock to me that I would feel that way.
It really made me think.
Hugh Green was portrayed as, let’s face it, a bit of a c*nt. His disregard was his undoing. His fault, really.
Some of her complaints (as I recall) were totally offensive to me, but I must confess others were reasonably well founded.
As dramas go it was a total triumph.

I have to agree with you Gavin, I can understand where she was coming form, but of course some points were lets face Not great,
but Hugh Green is a real git, was he really Like that? if he was he was nasty pace of work,
It was great drama, I don;t agree with all her points, but I can;t believe the BBC would Go that Low back in those days!
I have to ask apart from one time was there any other time the postmaster Genral pulled the Plug?
Interesting follow up on BBC 4 just now - Aunties War on Smut.
They're talking about Max Miller being taken off the BBC for 5 years because of some smutty gags he did. A year or so ago a friend and I did the Brian Connley show on BBC2 (afternoon), and we went through the wringer over a couple of jokes in the routine.
Anything slightly risque was cut (even though it really wasn't), and in fact we couldn't do a gag about the actress Wendy Richard - instead they insisted we refer to her as "Pauline Fowler", despite that rendering the joke senseless. I suppose the latter was in case she took offense.
Am I the only person who doesn't really rate Julie Walters? She seems very experienced now at playing nice old women (or just older women, as last night proved).
I far preferred her performance in Educating Rita. However I love Willy.
