Can't see the 5 Live show going any time soon. The podcast is regularly in competition for the most popular on iTunes.

Suppose it depends where Simon Mayo ends op, though he did announce that it would continue.

He may well have a bit of time off next year for the filming of the TV show based on his book.

Think if either he or Kermode wanted to finish then the other would stop too. They like presenting together and usually coordinate their holidays so that they’re off at the same time.

I did notice that in a news bulletin during their pre-recorded “Best Of” show the newsreader said “There won’t be any film programme on the BBC next year”. Think Keemode would’ve has something to say about that!

Not hearing that theme tune after so long is going to be a big blow.

They should reformat the News Channel Film Review into Film 2019 with Mark and Jane, getting in on a legacy brand but keeping it exactly the same how it is now with Mark and Jane. Indeed it was still called Film 24 until relatively recently, many years into the News Channel branding.

As people have suggested, I think the News Channel's Film Review programme with Mark Kermode is the natural successor here - assuming they want to reintroduce a film programme to BBC One's schedule at some point. It's always an interesting watch.

It’s a shame. I’d have thought it was a relatively inexpensive programme to make - after all the clips used would be (I think) provided as promotion and used under fair comment rules, so wouldn’t cost much (if anything). Plus one presenter and the occasional guest in the redressed corner of a studio isn’t going to be an expensive studio booking either.

Seems to have gone the way of other notable arts content - such as the Radio 2 Arts Programme - a long standing fixture in the schedules which bumbled about for a long time after its most famous presenter left (died?) then vanished without much fanfare.

Film xx was one of those little programmes that used to be made in one of the small Pres studios at TVC. Like The Sky at Night and Points of View, it made good and sensible use of Pres B. When it closed those programmes found themselves using a corner of a spare and otherwise cavernous main block studios like TC4. I’m pretty sure I even saw The Sky at Night set up in the corner of TC1 once.

There was a pilot for 'Kermode & Mayo's Film Thing' back in 2015

Coincidentally, Mark's ended Kermode Uncut after 10 years...

I've yet to meet anyone who has ever watched the Film programme, going right back to the Barry Norman days.

I've always been aware of its existence, but don't think I've ever seen it.

It’s one of those programmes like The South Bank Show was, where the theme music was a cue for people to switch off and go to bed

One of those shows that nobody watched but everyone is upset when it's axed, like Top Of The Pops and shopping at Woolworths.

I watched it for a while. When Claudia Winkleman took over they started doing it live and invited tweets.

Personally I think it was on too late, it was often at 23:15, and later still outside England.

Onto replacing it with an extendes The Film Review, and they would have to move it to the weekend as Mark Kermode does the Radio 5 show and News Channel programme on the same day currently, so he only has to be at the BBC one day a week (although presumably he does go to London on other days for previews).

I’ve always found it a bit snobbish and not very accessible to the average moviegoer.

The fact it wasn't on 52 weeks a year was a problem, as some of the big blockbusters wouldn't get reviewed.
