Perhaps you don't know many people. I know lots of people who like him and find him very funny.
I'm not disputing that
some
people like him (Jon is a person, after all), but I'm taking my personal experience as a relative measure.
When I talk about people I
know
, I'm talking about people who I know well enough to end up talking about Adrian Chiles. I don't go up to people when I first meet them, and say "Chiles - yea or nay?".
Each to his own. For me the BBC choice of music was hugely better and worked well with the titles - and had a really summery feel. ITVs were a bit forgettable, and a bit obvious.
For me the BBC studio was far more impressive. The AR in particular really gave the set a lift and added to the production. Think the BBC were also deploying Piero analysis more effectively - though ITV were also using it.
ITV were also cursed with the annoying support half-way across their windows, spoiling the panoramic effect the BBC were able to deliver. ITV also appeared to have less window, as they had to dress the edges of the window to extend them a bit. It felt to me as if the BBC had got a better space and made the most of it.
BBC set design was, for me, far classier - ITVs was just a gaudy mishmash with no real branding. ITV obviously felt the need to get out of their studio... The outside presentation did look a bit "Homebase garden furniture" and some of their team didn't look at all comfortable. Nice idea to leave the studio though.
I like Adrian but he has not been as good at presenting football coverage as he was at presenting The One Show or even Working Lunch. I still enjoy his presenting though, he is funny (as far as football presenters can be funny) just as much as Gary Lineker and co can be funny (again, as far as they can be).
There's no doubt that the general public don't like him though, or at least the media don't like him, regardless of the quality of ITV's coverage. At least they didn't cut to an ad break this time round...
Nevertheless, the BBC's production is always top quality and I don't know anyone who would turn to ITV for the final, Adrian Chiles or not. The BBC is the default for events like this, they're trusted to do a good job.
Yet if they swapped channels people would argue the other way.
.
That's a bit rich.
80% of the ITV pundits/presenters tonight are ex BBC.Amazing how after years of your criticism of BBC punditry at past tournaments you've suddenly fallen for them.

The BBC's studio was indeed far and away the better, the worst i saw was ESPN's it was an awful effort with a huge desk which was the sort of thing you would have seen on the BBC 20 years ago. I think the BBC could have used the beach better, and i didnt think the BBC's match graphics were as good as HBS's official ones. I thought ITV's idea to use the beach was a nice idea though.

I thought the world feed graphics just looked odd, the use of gold in South Africa was much nicer than the green and they weren't such a weird shape then. Hate the grey silvery colour of the FIFA graphics though in general, UEFA's are usually far better than FIFA's graphics. The gold of BBC Sport does the World Cup much more justice, I know people dislike the fact the graphics aren't custom from the BBC for the competition, but the BBC always brings in it's new package at World Cup's and it was using gold for the World Cup for a long time before it appeared across the board, it also makes the presentation that bit more tidy for me that everything matches on the Beeb. The BBC's graphics do the impossible in that they are both more classy whilst being glossier and more prestigious.

I did too. It seemed to match the tone of the event, the BBC was just a bit too 'formal' last night
with everyone suited up. The use of garden furniture and the beach worked last night, in a nice retro 'back to basics' sort of way, though it would have got very tiresome if all the matches had been presented that way.
The punditry had some good 'blokey humour', something the BBC was virtually devoid of.
Reminded me very much of the 2011 Royal Wedding. BBC solid, and what you'd expect from them, ITV
quirky and fresh, with nothing to lose by trying it, and all credit to them.
