I think I have what' referred to as, "Freeview, sick to death with the facile repeats and the number of stations with no subtitles so I'm looking for suggestions as to what provider I should go for.

Wouldn't this fit in with Media & Tech though? Not here?

I think your best bet is probably Sky or Virgin, depending on what you want. Sky has Sky Q, which allows you to watch Netflix and YouTube while Virgin has mostly the same features but uses the TiVO system.

All you'll really get is more channels with more repeats by switching from Freeview.

The subtitles problem is independent of what platform you’re viewing on. As has been recommended to you in the past on this forum, your best bet is to first complain to the TV channel that isn't showing subtitles, and then if you don’t get a decent response complain to Ofcom. Not all channels are required to provided subtitles, and there are channels that are only required to provide a percentage of their programmes with subtitles. I agree with you though, in this day and age as much as possible should be subtitled, and it’s annoying when a programme doesn't have them.

As for channels, you should probably look at an online TV guide first and see what the channels you can’t currently get are offering, and whether their programmes interest you enough to pay for a subscription to satellite or cable. Remember, Sky Atlantic - home of most of the most popular American shows - can only be received through Sky or their online video service, Now TV.

Now TV could be the cheapest option to get more channels, the Entertainment pack £7.99 a month which will give you another 11 channels - Sky 1, Sky Witness, Sky Atlantic, Gold, Comedy Central, Sky Arts, Fox, MTV, Nat Geo Wild, Discovery Channel and SyFy. Movies is another £10 on top if you wanted them.

However there are usually copious deals out there that you can jump on to bring this down - last couple of Black Friday deals they were doing Entertainment and Movies £99 for a year, or £8.25 a month for 22 channels.

A lot of the on demand on NowTv is subtitled. Not all of it but a lot of the movies are. None of the live streams are subtitled AFAIK.
