Thing is you rarely needed the backing copy totally accurate as if the main failed there was a bit of reaction time to cut to it. Sometimes it was probably better to be 3 seconds behind!

Directors are notorious for jumping into breakdown rather than taking a guard copy, it's just a natural reaction I suppose. There was an incident in that area where a programme just stopped mid way through (maybe the pres op left it in remote, no one knew why). There was a guard copy running but channel went straight into breakdown anyway. Thing is it was the programme just before the 9 o clock news so that was late on air, which was quite a big deal then (but easier to do than now I suspect) and it wasn't really necessary to

A Sky Arts breakdown here from 2009. I’ve seen this on a couple of old Sky breakdowns before but go to 2:03 in the video and look at the way the “Temporary Fault” slide “loads” onto the screen, very strange, like it’s being generated by some really old computer!

That's the stills store loading the fault caption.

Notice how it cuts to a Sky Arts logo and then the fault slide loads. Presumably they cut up the caption just as they realised it was the wrong one and then quickly changed it

The same kind of loading slide happens here, albeit 11 years earlier from 1998. In the below clip Sky Travel seems to fade/load back on even though it should be Sky Cinema. It’s only 1/2 seconds long, but like the above it’s noticeable.

Here's a similar one from Meridian. You just catch a couple of frames of a previous image during the mix.

Not sure why in that case where they were pulling a programme off air (they returned from an ad break and played the first part again!) there wouldn't be the extra half a second to load the right still before taking it to air.
Write that down in your copybook now.

Yes the caption says 'ITV1 News follows the Royal Variety Performance' and then loads up the Meridian logo caption.

It'll either be because the TC had a lot to do and forgot to have it ready or possibly it's some sort of automatic process that loads the breakdown caption when it's taken to air and it's a bit slow

As a wild guess it may have been automation problems. I recall a similar occurance where a football match had gone into extra time, and the automation system faded the image down, as and started up a trailer, at more or less the original scheduled finish time

In fact I've just realised what's happening with that, they've obviously got a 'breakdown' event in the running order. That cuts to the capgen and selects the correct slide. But of course as it's used without warning the slide is selected as that event goes to air hence its slightly late
TVMan and Steve in Pudsey gave kudos

I don't believe Meridian had automated transmission. TVS had a computerised transmission schedule (running order if you like) but not automated transmission, I'm assuming Meridian inherited TVS' kit and would not have replaced it as it was fairly new?

Meridian did have an automation system, late 90s into early 00s. Anglia, HTV West, and Meridian itself were all played out from Northam.
It was due to the United Media tie up. It wasn't used for very long, until the three operations were consumed into LNN at the South Bank.

The breakdown being discussed, and the extra time football being cut off that I remember, were from that era I think

The date in the clip is November 2001, no way they'd have had a manual TX suite by then

You're probably right then, I will ask round when I next get the chance. Do you know who made and installed it? The name 'Drake' is in my mind for the TVS system.

PS. The vertical wipe of the slides in the posting above is very characteristic of the Rank Cintel slide system installed at TVS (which everybody hated).

I hesitated to say Drake in the last post, but I think you've confirmed in my own mind it was!
