when Coronation Street launched over 45 years ago, it was the beginning of soap operas that would be launched through the 70s, 80s, and 90s - Emmerdale, EastEnders, Hollyoaks, Neighbours, River City etc.

But out of all the British soap operas - which is YOUR favourite and is there a particular character or characters that you like more than the others?

My favourite soap opera would have to be EastEnders and my fav characters would be...Dot, Lou, Angie, Kat, Den (in the earlier years!!) and Johnny.

However I used to love Coronation Street but not as much these days, I love the 'golden oldie' characters such as Ena Sharples, Annie Walker, Bet Lynch, Elsie Tanner. More recent ones include Ken, Deirdre, Emily, Audrey, Blanche - hiliarious, Rita, the Battersbys, Richard Hillman - he was just so evil!

I watched an episode of The Grove Family on BBC4 last year, it was like watching a public information film. Very camp too.

Granny Grove reminded me of the old Ma Clampett from the Beverley Hillbillies.

Returning to the thread, I think Bet Lynch is my UK number one and Alexis my US number one but judging by viewers the most popular has to be Hilda, think she had 27 million seeing her go.

I'm sorry, but my 2 favourite soaps (in fact the ONLY soaps I have ever enjoyed) are quite possibly the two biggest flops of recent years.

- Crossroads (both 2001 and 2003)
- Night And Day

It's amazing to think that at one point around mid-2001, you could see Night And Day at 17.00 followed by Crossroads at 17:30 - what an hour!
