SO WHAT IS?

I guess 'BBC Sport' will replace it and sports will be listed separately without using the 'Grandstand' tag. Its all Six Nations coverage next week.

As a previous poster mentioned, with the sports being listed separately, the minor sports will probably fall by the wayside.

I'm not sure why but i'm more likely to watch a minor sport if its all under Grandstand as i'm already watching Grandstand-Grandstand links everything together.

I wonder if its the end of links between different sports. Just usual continuity, ie trails and idents, before the next sport. If this is not the case what was the point in ditching the Grandstand name? We would just see a BBC Sport logo were the Grandstand one used to be.

And dont give me all that brand awareness bull. If the BBC were so all about branding everything BBC, it could easily have been renamed BBC Grandstand.
And the interactive stream could easily have been called Grandstand interactive.

So, next Saturday I want to see the reason why the BBC dropped the Grandstand brand. I want to see a completely different style sports show. If this does not happen and all we get is a BBC Sport logo in place of the Grandstand one it is a complete injustice to a brand that has brought sports programming to the BBC for so many years.

What is the betting that when there is no major sport event shown live on BBC, they will promote SCORE to BBC1 and possibly use that as a link between varying sporting events during the afternoon???

There won't be a link between sports any more, it'll just be normal BBC continuity between items.

What would have been a typical Grandstand Saturday will, in future, look like this in the listings:

12.10pm Football Focus
1.00pm Racing from Ascot
2.30pm Rugby Union
4.30pm Final Score

And on Sunday 25th February, you'll see something like this in the Radio Times for BBC2:

1.50pm Badminton
3.30pm World Cup Cycling
5.15pm Ski Sunday

Only difference is, you'll have different sets of titles for each sport, with separate presenters, and a lack of other sports news and latest scores.

My point is, well . . .what is the point? Really?

Fair enough, if there is a big event like the Olympics, Grand National or Six Nations, dispense with the brand. But there's no reason at all why Grandstand can't make an appearance on the more mundane sporting weekends - to be honest, I'm more likely to watch an afternoon of badminton and cycling if its mixed in with news and features, rather than a stand-alone programme.

Completly agree with everything you say!

So what happens now if a major sport story breaks - but the BBC aren't showing that sport in the afternoon. Most recent example would be the death of snooker player Paul Hunter - naturally covered in Grandstand, but they couldn't justify it being tied in with something like live rugby coverage.

But how often does that happen?

Well, every week actually! Not a death obviously, but there is always something going on in sport which warrants a mention.

I think we'll see the amount of sport actually in the afternoon schedules begin to drop soon and then at some point a few years down the line the beeb will loose the rights to some of the big sporting events, have to rely on the smaller sports and come up with an idea to tie them all together under one brand... Grandstand. Rolling Eyes

I can understand dropping it from Saturdays as there tends to be a focus on one particular sport now but on Sundays when they still have things like cycling and badminton and even Ski Sunday I'm surprised they haven't kept one brand for it.

Reminds me of ten years ago when RTÉ dumped Sports Stadium, its (even longer!) version of Grandstand. We were promised it wasn't the end of sport on RTÉ, they'd just be presented seperately. Now, unless there's a big event on, you're just as likely to find a film as sport on RTÉ Two on a Saturday afternoon.

To tie this back to Grandstand, one of my Sports Stadium memories is how RTÉ would take its horse racing coverage directly from an off-air feed of BBC1. The amount of times you would see Des Lynam or Steve Rider appear momentarly before the cut back to the RTÉ studio was quite large!

I remember a few years ago (2001?) they didn't show it one Saturday afternoon when ITV had the cup final. That was a bit of a milestone and that showed it wasn't sacrosanct.

I did think it ridiculous when, in April, they said it would be phased-out over the next couple of years. What would 'phased-out' mean anyway?

To be honest I think this will happen with the BBC, it happened with ITV when they dropped World Of Sport. They kept On The Ball (albeit renamed Saint & Greavsie), they kept the Results, they kept the Wrestling and the ITV7 moved over to Channel 4, which by that was now carrying almost all of ITV's Horse Racing coverage. But as time went I on between 1.40pm and 4.40pm (on average) for most of my childhood ITV on a Saturday afternoon didn't have very much Sport and we often saw B series from the US or really long old Films.

The closest and best idea ITV have had of late is when they showed The Goal Rush on ITV1 for most of the afternoon, which in principal was a good idea to those who want to watch Soccer Saturday but who don't have the access to Sky Sports.

I can see the BBC keeping Sports on a Saturday afternoon for now, but soon I can see repeats of Diagnosis Murder and Murder She Wrote slipping in somewhere along the line, something which did happen once or twice last year even when Grandstand was on!

But the BBC have commitments to Sport, so hopefully they won't go down the ITV and RTÉ route.

There might Revamp the whole Saturday programme list:

there could have a new Sports programme and move cooking show later?
also move the remaining sport to BBC2?

Did anybody get a video clip of the montage used at the end of Sunday's programme?

It was a long long while before the end of World of Sport and any other regular saturday afternoon sports programme. We were lucky in Grabalotland (oops I mean Granadaland) as during the early 1990's afternoon sport was resurrected with Granada's own version which was simulcast at least in the Border region - it had Rugby League, Football talk, various types of minority sports and WCW Wrestling and of course its own results service - the only bad thing was it was prsented by Elton Welsby.

Then early millennium came Football First - first shown on ITV2 and then season later came to ITv1 and then renamed to The Goal Rush. IMHO it was far superior to Soccer Saturday and wished it had continued, but ITV seemed to give it up quite easily and what a shame. Although it was replaced by BBC's own version Score. Again it was good until they changed they graphics and slight change in presentation style last season then I just moved back to Soccer Saturday.

ITV or five should bring back The Goal Rush, as it was. It was dman good and would give Soccer Saturday a reall run for the money

But now I can see Score being promoted to BBC1 as the filler in between the many sports programmes to be shown!

You've totally missed the whole point. The reason they've dropped the 'Grandstand' umbrella is so they don't have to produce a 'sports show'. The aim of the process isn't to get rid of the brand, it's jettisoning a format they don't use any more. Ditching the name is the means to an end..... not the end itself

Next Saturday is a perfect example of why having an umbrella name for Saturday afternoon's programming is irrelevant - BBC1 has '6 Nations Rugby' bookended by 2 football programmes. There'd be no point calling anything 'Grandstand' next Saturday, it's just 6 Nations.
