I liked the montage, and it was good to hear the theme tune for one last time, on Television that is.
It's a shame to see the brand go, but we have to move on, the BBC show loads of Sport outside of the weekend and Grandstand as a brand name makes little or no sense now.
Surely though it's better to have a brand rather than coverage labelled as just "Six Nations Rugby ", "International Athletics" and even "Olympic Games" etc.
I wonder what theme they'll use for the Six Nations then - Rugby Special?
Also, when did Grandstand change from the original to the more familiar theme?
And Clare saying "oh by the way...this is the last ever Grandstand" made it all seem pointless.
Did she? Sad to see it go but it was inevitable really.

So what happens now if a major sport story breaks - but the BBC aren't showing that sport in the afternoon. Most recent example would be the death of snooker player Paul Hunter - naturally covered in Grandstand, but they couldn't justify it being tied in with something like live rugby coverage.
But how often does that happen? Most of the time there isn't necessarily any need for there to be further coverage of events like that...
Surely though it's better to have a brand rather than coverage labelled as just "Six Nations Rugby ", "International Athletics" and even "Olympic Games" etc.
But there is effectively a brand - "BBC Sport" - instead of being linked to Grandstand...Surely it will be better for all International Athletics, racing etc to be linked under the same title than sometimes being inside Grandstand and other times not seeing as the competition goes on for more than one day? Surely it will allow for more consistency...
I think that the Grandstand brand was dying out, especially when it was getting more and more frequent to have one sport dominating the show and not a collection of many different ones. Grandstand became little more than linking shows together and to be fair, it will just be easier to bill the programmes separately.
True, a loss of a good programme, but it wasn't like it used to be.

There was one in between too. The original theme ran (albeit with at least two different title sequences) from the outset until - as far as I can remember - 1970 or '71. There was a second theme which ran from then until (this time I am pretty sure) 1976, when the current theme arrived. I seem to remember this coincided with a new studio look and a programme anniversary - possibly the 1000th programme?
It was a bit of an emotional ending... I think Claire did get a little bit emotional just as she was saying goodbye.
The montage was good but they could've done better (ie showing clips of the old title sequences) and it would've been better if they'd used the full version of the Grandstand theme at the end rather than looping it.
A poignant, albeit quiet ending. And well done Clare - I think she got the mood just about right.
But PLEASE BBC - do this old working horse justice with a proper tribute programme sometime soon. Millions of people grew up with Grandstand. I just can't believe it won't be back next week!
I guess 'BBC Sport' will replace it and sports will be listed separately without using the 'Grandstand' tag. Its all Six Nations coverage next week.
As a previous poster mentioned, with the sports being listed separately, the minor sports will probably fall by the wayside.
I'm not sure why but i'm more likely to watch a minor sport if its all under Grandstand as i'm already watching Grandstand-Grandstand links everything together.
I wonder if its the end of links between different sports. Just usual continuity, ie trails and idents, before the next sport. If this is not the case what was the point in ditching the Grandstand name? We would just see a BBC Sport logo were the Grandstand one used to be.
And dont give me all that brand awareness bull. If the BBC were so all about branding everything BBC, it could easily have been renamed BBC Grandstand.
And the interactive stream could easily have been called Grandstand interactive.
So, next Saturday I want to see the reason why the BBC dropped the Grandstand brand. I want to see a completely different style sports show. If this does not happen and all we get is a BBC Sport logo in place of the Grandstand one it is a complete injustice to a brand that has brought sports programming to the BBC for so many years.
