I know there is a BBC Sport thread and this has been discussed in that thread but I felt that a program spanning 49 years that is coming to an end very soon deserved a thread of its own.

Yes, news has broken that Grandstand is to finish this weekend (more info here).

So this is the place to post all your Grandstand related comments about the pioneering sports show that has been the BBC's flagship sports program for Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Farewell Grandstand!

What are there replacing it with?

They cut that short, I thought it was meant to finish later.

Oh well, all the best to Grandstand. I'll never forget waiting for the titles after a morning of Going Live and seeing Desmond Lynam introducing an afternoon of sport from a very grey themed studio.

Let me be absolutely clear: this does not mean the end of sport on BBC One and BBC Two on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Yeah, that's what ITV said when it canned World Of Sport 20+ years ago. And sure enough Saturday afternoon sport did continue -- for a while.

Expect BBC1 Saturdays to be full of repeats of Keeping Up Appearances and 50+ year old films before the year's out.

Yes, it surprised me too when I heard the news. It was supposed to be 'phased out' over the next few years and completely end, IIRC, sometime in 2008.
But for some unexplained reason the brand has been dropped early.

Well bang goes quality Saturday afternoon TV - still it was inevitable with the shambles that Saturday evening TV has become...

Still, at least the theme will live on on the KPM website! Rolling Eyes

If those responsible at the BBC are reading this - please give the programme a dignified send off, with the proper theme tune (without all the tweaks its had in the last few years) and without it being spoken over by the presenter for once!

I'm lost for words. Stupid decision in the first place, so disrespectful to just pull it with one days notice - and even worse it's going on a weekend when it's all cut to shreds due to the football.

I've got a feeling though this isn't the last we've heard of Grandstand - and I'm sure once BBC Sport gets a boss who knows what he's doing thoughts of resurrecting it won't be far away!

My message on the blog to Roger Mosey - Director of BBC Sport :

Hopefully you're not far behind then!

The BBC has made some bad decisions over the years, but this is the worst and pulling it with just a couple of days notice show you have no respect at all for the history of the programme.

Worth noting it's going on a weekend when it's cut to shreds due to the BBC showing three football games - it just shows where the BBC's priorities lie, and it's not where they should be!

I have a feeling though that when we have someone who knows what they're doing in charge of BBC Sport that Grandstand may rise from the ashes!

I knew it was ending this year, but was not sure when. Can't quite believe it! It will defently be an end of an era... they think it's all over... it IS now!!! Crying or Very sad

All a bit of hysteria over nothing this. There will still be sport on a Saturday afternoon, they haven't lost the rights, that's clear if you bother to read Roger Mosey's blog.

There will still be all the component parts, football focus, final score, rugby, snooker, golf, etc. It's been this way for ages, "Grandstand" is nothing more than a 5 minute programme in the schedules which merely tops and tails the coverage, everything else is listed independently anyway.

A fuss over nothing, and it's such an old fashioned name. All that will be missed is the theme tune, the rest was lost years ago.
